Description
Denroku Sukegawa is a secondary character in the anime Hanasaku Iroha - Blossoms for Tomorrow. He is a 73-year-old man who serves as the janitor and maintenance manager for the Kissuisō hot spring inn, where he has worked since the establishment first opened its doors. His nickname among the other staff members is Mame-jii, or Old-man Beans, a playful reference to a famous bean company whose name sounds similar to his own. In appearance, he has distinctive twin ahoge, or hair strands, and is frequently depicted with his eyes closed.

As the longest-serving employee alongside the inn's owner, Denroku acts as a bedrock of institutional knowledge and a stabilising presence at Kissuisō. He is naturally reserved and speaks sparingly, but remains highly observant of the goings-on around him, often noticing when younger colleagues are facing difficulties and offering them concise advice. Beneath his rough exterior, he harbours a quietly nurturing disposition toward the younger staff members. On multiple occasions, when the younger generation undertakes well-intentioned initiatives that might draw the ire of the strict owner, Sui Shijima, Denroku provides them with secret support from behind the scenes. This covert assistance stems not from a place of opposition to the management, but from his genuine wish for the best possible outcome for Kissuisō and for everyone who works there.

His role in the story is often that of a subtle but crucial facilitator, using his deep knowledge of the inn's history to help the staff find solutions. For instance, he once revealed a hidden cache of historic uniforms to the protagonist, Ohana Matsumae, an act that empowered her to revitalise the inn's appeal by reintroducing the vintage attire to guests. He also meticulously maintains a daily business journal for the inn, ensuring that its operational continuity is always preserved in record. These logbooks become a significant plot device in The Home Sweet Home movie, when Ohana discovers old volumes kept by Denroku that detail the time when her mother, Satsuki, worked as a teenager at Kissuisō. Through reading these records, Ohana is able to learn about her mysterious father and gain a deeper understanding of her mother's past.

Denroku shares a close and respectful bond with the inn's owner, Sui Shijima. He is one of the very few people who can speak with her openly, and she values his counsel after decades of working alongside him. His primary domain is the boiler room and the inn's infrastructure, but he routinely handles diverse minor tasks that fall outside the regular duties of the waitstaff and chefs. This quiet dedication to the inn's upkeep, along with his deep institutional memory, solidifies his status as an essential pillar of the Kissuisō family.
