Description
Iris' Axew, a Dragon-type Pokémon, began as a newly hatched egg gifted to Iris by the Elder of her Dragon Village hometown. From the start, Axew displayed a friendly and playful nature, quickly bonding with Pokémon like Ash's Pikachu and forming a close, brotherly relationship with Ash's Scraggy. Its small size and affectionate personality led it to travel outside its Poké Ball frequently, often nestling in Iris' hair for comfort and convenience.
Early battles revealed Axew's underdeveloped skills, showing timidity in confrontations and distress even against weak attacks. Mastering its signature Dragon Rage move proved initially difficult; early attempts caused uncontrolled explosions instead of a directed beam, prompting Ash and Cilan to teasingly call these failures "Dragon Sneeze," much to Iris' annoyance. Despite these struggles, Axew held a persistent dream to evolve fully into a Haxorus, a goal it stated explicitly during its journey.
Axew's development was gradual. It gained control over Dragon Rage during a battle against Team Rocket. A significant milestone came in the Club Battle tournament, where Axew mastered the powerful Outrage move mid-battle against Luke's Golett, securing victory and demonstrating growing resilience and adaptability, though it initially caused confusion that Axew later learned to manage.
After parting ways with Ash, Axew evolved off-screen twice: first into Fraxure, then into Haxorus. As Haxorus, it became a cornerstone of Iris' team during her tenure as Unova Champion and her World Coronation Series participation. Its evolved form showcased greater seriousness and battle determination, like in its intense match against Ash's Dragonite. Despite this power and maturity, Haxorus retained emotional depth, becoming visibly disappointed after losses and accepting comfort from Iris, while also developing mutual respect for opponents like Ash's Dragonite.
Notable traits include Axew's consistent loyalty and obedience to Iris—unlike her other Pokémon which occasionally disobeyed—and its symbolic "big brother" role to newly hatched Pokémon like Ash's Scraggy. Axew also exhibited a brief crush on Iris' Emolga, as confirmed by Iris.
