Description
Essex operates as Delta Squad's biotic specialist, a Systems Alliance special forces unit protecting Fehl Prime. His personality blends a carefree, boastful attitude with significant overconfidence. He frequently brags about his biotic prowess while persistently hitting on fellow marine Kamille, who consistently rejects him. This includes physical harassment like groping her, leading to retaliatory physical confrontations such as elbow locks or groin attacks from Kamille.
During the 2183 Blood Pack assault on Fehl Prime, Essex fights under Lieutenant James Vega after their shuttle crashes. His grandstanding nearly ruins a critical flanking maneuver when he carelessly tosses his rifle toward Kamille, striking rocks and alerting enemies. He compensates by unleashing powerful biotic attacks described as "blue balls from his palms," decimating Blood Pack ranks with sniper support from Milque. His recklessness resurfaces when startled by a varren, misfiring biotics that inadvertently hurl the creature onto Kamille. Rushing to aid her, he is overpowered by the krogan Brood and brutally stomped until Vega intervenes.
Two years later, during the 2185 Collector invasion, Essex remains on Fehl Prime. His persistent flirtation with Kamille continues despite her relationship with squadmate Mason. When Collector Seeker Swarms paralyze colonists, Essex volunteers to guard the squad’s retreat to underground labs. Using biotics to fend off the swarms, he becomes paralyzed himself after Kamille is captured. Administered an experimental antidote that initially seems ineffective, he later recovers unexpectedly and executes a pivotal rescue during a Praetorian attack, immobilizing the creature so Vega can destroy it.
In the final assault aboard the Collector ship, Essex wields an Arc Projector alongside Milque to defend krogan ally Brood’s vessel. After Cerberus agent Messner betrays the squad, Essex receives a biotic power cell from Brood via Vega. He amplifies his abilities to hold off Collector forces solo, enabling Vega’s attempt to save archaeologist Treeya. Ultimately, Essex is impaled by a Collector General’s claw. In a final act, he uses his biotics to propel himself and the enemy into a chasm, dying to ensure Vega’s survival.
Throughout these events, Essex’s character evolves from a flippant showman to a self-sacrificing soldier. His recurring catchphrase—"Just trying to look cool before I die"—frames his journey, culminating in a heroic demise that fulfills this ethos.
