Description
Shinya Ozeki, a third-year student at Odachi High School, founded and initially captained its sumo club. Before Hinomaru Ushio joined, he endured solitary membership, facing mockery from peers and bullying from delinquents who seized the club's dojo. Standing 173 cm tall and weighing 108 kg in high school, his imposing frame contrasted with a timid, non-confrontational nature, especially against groups. His unwavering dedication manifested in meticulously maintaining a makeshift sumo ring in the schoolyard after losing the dojo. Preferring team competitions due to low confidence and a five-year official losing streak without a single win, his fortunes shifted only after Hinomaru's recruitment.
Hinomaru's arrival and the formation of a full team spurred significant growth in Ozeki. He competed in key tournaments, including the Chiba preliminaries of the Inter High Tournament, contributing to Odachi High's national qualification. His sumo style emphasized strong fundamentals—lower body strength and endurance—though a high center of gravity left him susceptible to throws. A critical display of resilience came during a match against Sanada, where his defensive focus allowed him to outlast his opponent despite an initial split-second loss.
Post-graduation, Ozeki entered professional sumo, affiliating with Nagato Stable instead of Hinomaru's to cultivate future rivalry. Adopting the shikona "Taroutachi Shinya," he achieved the rank of west maegashira 16. His personality evolved into a serious, rough demeanor; he treated former friends as rivals during matches while privately acknowledging their achievements. He earned the Fighting Spirit prize in a September tournament. Years later, his weight increased to 146 kg, reflecting sustained commitment.
Outside sumo, Ozeki enjoys keeping tropical fish, building scale models (especially castles), and eating desserts. Despite his size, he consumes regular meals lightly but indulges in sweets. His skin is noted for surprising softness. He also possesses a skilled singing voice, reportedly surpassing fellow sumo wrestler Tasashi Otegine.
