Description
Regal Bryant first appears as a convict ordered by the Pope of Tethe'alla to capture Colette Brunel. He ambushes Lloyd Irving's group in the Meltokio Sewers, taking Zelos Wilder hostage. His shock upon seeing Presea Combatir allows Genis Sage to strike, forcing his retreat. He later approaches the party in Gaoracchia Forest, seeking only to speak with Presea. Discovering her Exsphere, he tries to remove it, triggering a battle. Defeated and incapacitated, he is taken to Mizuho and agrees to travel with the group under Zelos's terms.
His past reveals he was Duke Bryant, president of the Lezareno Company. Guilt over his lover Alicia Combatir's death kept him from returning to Altamira. His assistant, George, gave Alicia to Exsphere broker Vharley for the Angelus Project. Regal traded the Toize Valley Mine to get her back, but mana corruption from her Exsphere had transformed her into a monster. At her request, Regal killed her to prevent further deaths, mirroring Kratos Aurion's past with Anna Irving. He surrendered and was imprisoned. The Pope promised to arrest Vharley if Regal captured Colette, driving his initial mission.
In Altamira, Regal saves George from Vharley by revealing his true identity. Presea deduces he killed Alicia, leading to a confrontation on a terrace where Alicia's spirit appears. She forgives Regal, explaining their love was thwarted by class differences. Though Presea struggles to forgive, she agrees not to be his enemy. Regal resolves to atone by aiding the group.
He wears permanent handcuffs as a self-imposed symbol of his crime and oath never to use his hands to kill again, restricting his combat to powerful kicks enhanced by greaves. He developed this style after prison advice, despite superior hand-based skills. His techniques form arte chains for specific functions like anti-air combat, supplemented by limited chi magic including Healer and Grand Healer.
Calm, polite, and gentlemanly despite his imposing presence, Regal possesses deep knowledge of Tethe'allan history and culture. He enjoys cooking, carrying his own kitchen knife, and is the party's second-best cook after Genis Sage. He prefers tofu and dislikes cucumbers and melons.
In the anime episode "Tethe'alla Arc 2," he allies with Lloyd Irving following his imprisonment, aiding the group as Colette's situation worsens. His character design features blue hair and shackles reflecting his penitence.
