Description
Hiroshi Kuzumi is a 15-year-old boy relocated from Tokyo to the remote mountain town of Jouga with his father Masaki and younger sister Mana due to his father's work transfer. He possesses black hair, violet eyes, wears square glasses, stands 1.67 meters tall, and weighs 58 kilograms. Hiroshi typically dresses in a school uniform: a white T-shirt, pants, and brown shoes. His classmate Kaname Asagiri nicknames him "Hakase" (Professor) based on his name's kanji; Hiroshi dislikes the unrealistic expectations of intelligence this implies but tolerates it from Kaname.
Upon arriving in Jouga, Hiroshi encounters unusual friendliness from most townspeople, though class president Nemuru Kushinada coldly warns him to avoid the old streets. He forms close bonds with neighbors Isuzu Tsumuhana and Kaname. Isuzu develops intense romantic feelings for Hiroshi, becoming highly possessive and frequently accompanying him to school. His relationship with his wheelchair-bound sister Mana is caring but occasionally strained by his overprotectiveness, conflicting with her desire for independence following a car accident.
Mysterious disappearances begin, initially dismissed as transfers. Hiroshi witnesses disturbing events: a girl wielding a scythe (later revealed as Nemuru) and masked figures executing individuals. He learns Jouga's residents are "Kamibito" (Jouga wolves in human form), intoxicated by a scent emitted by rare humans called "Temptations." Hiroshi himself is a Temptation, emitting a potent scent that can drive Kamibito to lose control of their predatory instincts. This explains the townspeople's initial fascination and Nemuru's hostility, as she serves as the "Hunter" executing Kamibito who succumb.
Key events shape Hiroshi:
- Isuzu's brother Issei, affected by Hiroshi's scent, becomes a "Fallen" Kamibito and is killed by Nemuru. Isuzu later succumbs and attacks Hiroshi but resists fully, surviving.
- Antagonist Shunichirō Sakaki, seeking to destroy Jouga over past grievances, kidnaps Hiroshi. While trapped, Nemuru confesses the town's secrets and nearly attacks Hiroshi due to his scent but restrains herself.
- During the Hassaku Festival, Sakaki exposes the Kamibito's existence and attempts to flood the town. Hiroshi joins forces with Nemuru, Isuzu, and Kaname to stop him, demonstrating leadership and courage. He physically intervenes to protect others during Sakaki's confrontation, though overpowered.
- After Sakaki's defeat, Hiroshi acknowledges Jouga's fragile peace but anticipates future threats. His relationship with Nemuru evolves into mutual trust and friendship, culminating in him using her first name for the first time.
Six months post-conflict, Hiroshi maintains friendships with Nemuru, Isuzu, and Kaname, sharing ordinary activities like meeting at ice cream parlors and recalling lighter incidents, such as Nemuru visiting in a costume or his temporary involvement in a maid café interview.
