Description
Riko Mikogami is one of the twin sisters in the Mikogami family, living in the nature-rich city of Kamihama. Her mother cares for pets and her father researches water fleas; she has sisters named Rimu and Nagisa. While searching for a runaway cat, she finds a mysterious Kirumin compact in the attic, gaining the ability to physically transform into animals. Her primary Kirumin form is a pink cat, reflecting her strong feline affinity, granting heightened agility, speed, and jumping prowess. Late in the series, her one-quarter Animalian heritage surfaces when she spontaneously transforms into a bat without the Kirumin device, revealing latent ancestral abilities.

She attends elementary school, bursting with lively energy that often leads to sudden fatigue. Riko dramatically dubs herself "The Great Detective Catherine" as the self-proclaimed leader of her "Detective Club." This egotistical streak fuels frequent arguments with Ken Inomata, though beneath their clashes lies genuine care and loyalty. She supports Ken during critical moments, like when he exceeds the 99-minute transformation limit or when they face peril together, refusing to abandon others. Her adventurous spirit drives persistent mystery-solving, often using her cat form to overcome obstacles.

Her growth involves increasing resilience and empathy. Early episodes feature her comically poor drawing skills as a running gag. She masters the Kirumin's evolving capabilities, such as the "Kirubara effect" enabling transformation into larger animals like a serval. She also learns animal communication, taught by her mother, deepening her connection to nature. Her quarter-Animalian heritage culminates in the finale when her spontaneous bat transformation without the Kirumin signifies acceptance of her hybrid identity. This revelation ties into broader familial secrets, including her relation to cousin Kanon Hatori.

Key relationships define her arc. She shares a close bond with twin sister Rimu and older sister Nagisa, often collaborating on detective adventures. Her dynamic with Ken evolves from rivalry to mutual reliance, starkly evident during crises like entrapment in a collapsed cave. She also interacts with Animalians Misa Hatori and Pars Ryūdō, initially perceived as antagonists but later revealed as part of a complex conflict involving her grandfather and the true antagonist, Kyousuke Futatsugi. The series concludes with her embracing her dual heritage while continuing detective work, though her Animalian potential remains unexplored in official spin-offs like the Ribon manga.
