Description
Professor Hershel Layton is a renowned archaeology professor at Gressenheller University in London, famed for his puzzle-solving skills and gentlemanly conduct. Born Theodore Bronev, he was adopted by Roland and Lucille Layton after the Targent organization kidnapped his biological parents, Leon and Rachel Bronev, orphaning him and his older brother, Hershel (later known as Jean Descole). Theodore then assumed the name Hershel Layton.
Key events shaped his youth, including the presumed death of his friend Randall Ascot in the Akbadain ruins due to a trap. Later, at university, he met Claire, who gave him his signature top hat shortly before she died in a time machine accident. These tragedies solidified his commitment to intellect and gentlemanly behavior.
Professionally, Layton became Gressenheller's youngest professor at 27. He mentors Luke Triton after aiding Luke's family in Misthallery and adopts Flora Reinhold following the resolution of her inheritance case in St. Mystere. He later becomes the adoptive father of Katrielle and Alfendi Layton.
Layton approaches mysteries with calm logic and deduction, often using phrases like "This reminds me of a puzzle," "Every puzzle has an answer," and "Critical thinking is the key to success." He avoids violence as ungentlemanly but is proficient in fencing and hand-to-hand combat when necessary, focusing on disarming opponents. While frequently assisting law enforcement like Inspector Chelmey, he identifies as an archaeologist, not a detective.
During the events of *Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva*, Layton and Luke investigate a letter from former student Janice Quatlane about strange occurrences at the Crown Petone Opera House, including the reappearance of the deceased Melina Whistler. A masked figure initiates a deadly game promising eternal life. Layton navigates lethal puzzles – identifying the oldest visible object (the stars) and the largest crown (the opera house itself) – confronts mechanical sharks and a transforming ship, and constructs an improvised helicopter to escape pursuing wolves.
Subsequent adventures reveal his brother, Jean Descole, as a masked antagonist. In the Azran Legacy, Layton learns Descole is his biological brother and their father, Leon Bronev, leads Targent. Layton rejects his birth name and disavows Bronev as his father, though he hopes for future reconciliation as archaeologists.
Privately, Layton carries sorrow, rarely removing the top hat, a memento from Claire. He maintains a stoic demeanor but shows fierce protectiveness towards Luke and Flora, evident when he risks his safety for their survival on Ambrosia Island.
Years later, Layton disappears under unknown circumstances. His children, Katrielle and Alfendi, continue his legacy. His whereabouts are eventually revealed to involve cryogenic suspension alongside Luke.
