Ganta Nakami is a high school student with black hair and glasses, typically seen in his standard school uniform often layered with flannel shirts. Childhood separation anxiety, sparked by his mother's sudden nighttime departure, fuels his chronic insomnia and a persistent dread that each new day brings worsening circumstances. This results in daytime fatigue, irritability, and social withdrawal, making him seem grumpy and misunderstood by peers, though he maintains a friendship with the understanding Tao Ukegawa. His path changes upon meeting Isaki Magari, a classmate sharing similar sleep struggles, in their school's abandoned astronomy observatory. This hidden space becomes their sanctuary for rest and a tentative bond, initially kept secret at school to avoid attention. Their connection deepens through nocturnal walks and astrophotography – pursued with a camera gifted by Isaki's father. These shared moments help Nakami open up emotionally, showing increasing concern for Isaki's well-being. To secure their use of the observatory, Nakami and Isaki revive the defunct astronomy club, with Nakami as president and Isaki as vice president. This responsibility motivates him to learn astronomy and astrophotography, aided by mentorship from Yui Shiromaru, a former award-winning astrophotographer. Club activities provide structure and purpose, easing his isolation. His romantic relationship with Isaki grows organically through shared vulnerability; notably, her ability to fall asleep while listening to his heartbeat symbolizes their mutual comfort. His initial formality and guardedness gradually soften, reflecting significant emotional growth. Nakami's insomnia becomes more manageable through his partnership with Isaki. Navigating school challenges, collaborating on club projects, and confronting personal anxieties together build their resilience. The astronomy club mirrors their relationship: both transition from neglected states to spaces of renewal and discovery. His journey moves from solitary suffering toward solace found in shared vulnerability and purposeful activity.
