Description
Sixteen-year-old Ouri Kagami grew up at Sekku Temple orphanage under the care of Buddhist monk Keisei Tagami, who discovered him as a three-year-old. His early years were defined by an intense fascination with death, fostering a withdrawn and somber nature that earned him the nickname "Hanagami" from the temple children. This disposition softened during adolescence into a more cordial and protective personality, though he maintained an uncommon comfort with mortality.

Ouri possesses a supernatural origin: born moments after his fatally injured mother returned as a sentient corpse (Shikabane) following a hit-and-run accident. This event rendered his nature ambiguous, leading characters to question whether he is human, Shikabane, or a hybrid. These circumstances remained hidden from him until later revelations.

He lived an ordinary life as a high school student and part-time worker at Cafe Parthenon until encounters with Shikabane Hime Makina Hoshimura, guided by a mysterious talking black cat to supernatural events. Despite Makina's attempts to keep him away from danger, he persistently involved himself, driven by concern for Keisei and a growing fascination with Makina.

A pivotal change occurred when the fatally wounded Keisei, aged 33, transferred his contractual blood seal to Ouri. This bound Ouri as Makina's new Contracted Monk, compelling him to shoulder Keisei's duties in the Kōgon Sect's anti-corpse operations. He underwent intensive physical and spiritual training at Mount Goryo to master combat with the shakujō staff and the rune-based energy system sustaining Makina.

His relationship with Makina evolved from initial mutual wariness to profound interdependence. Early interactions featured Makina protectively dismissing his involvement, countered by his insistence on seeing her humanity despite her undead state. Their dynamic involved a complex emotional triangle with Keisei, as Makina harbored unrequited romantic feelings for the monk who raised Ouri. Later developments suggested reciprocal affection between Makina and Ouri, noted by others and culminating in exchanges affirming his belief in her fundamental vitality due to her enduring struggle.

Regarding his hybrid nature, Ouri grappled with existential uncertainty after learning his birth circumstances. This ambiguity manifested physically through unexplained regenerative abilities and sensory perceptions atypical for humans, though his precise physiological classification remained unresolved.

Physically, Ouri has light brown hair often styled with a distinctive ahoge (cowlick), brown eyes, and stands 167 cm tall. He typically wears his school uniform or monastic training attire. Documented preferences include sweets (especially anko bean paste), milk, and cats, alongside an aversion to strong spices. His blood type is O.
