Description
Coathicarte Apa Lagranges is a powerful spirit and the contracted partner of the protagonist Phoron Tatara in the anime Polyphonica. Known by many titles, including the Red Elder Spirit, the Crimson Annihilator, the Bloody Duchess, and in some adaptations the Crimson Queen, she is one of the oldest and most formidable spirits in her world.
In her default state, Coathicarte, who is often called Coatie by Phoron, appears as a petite young girl with distinctive red hair, brown eyes, and a large black bow adorning her attire. Her true nature as a spirit is revealed through her six wings, which are sometimes depicted as eight in later stories, marking her as a being of immense age and power. However, when Phoron performs a Divine Song, either by singing or playing his instrument, she transforms into a full-figured, mature woman of considerable height, unlocking her enormous latent power.
Her personality is complex, marked by a strong-willed and often possessive nature. She is intensely devoted to Phoron, driven by a single-minded desire that he belong to her and her alone. This possessiveness frequently manifests as jealousy and moodiness, especially when other girls show an interest in him, leading her to question his actions and seek closer physical contact, such as holding his hand. Her behavior can often be described as capricious, yet her motivations are rooted in a deep, centuries-old loneliness that found an answer in Phoron's music.
The central motivation for Coathicarte is the bond she formed with Phoron. She first encountered him as a lonely boy on the roof of an orphanage, and she was immediately entranced by his singing voice. This profound connection led her to initiate a sacred contract with him, a pledge that would bind them together. Prior to this, she had been imprisoned in the basement of the Torvas Divine Song Players Academy, where Phoron would later inadvertently free her by singing a Divine Song as a student, though he initially believed their meeting to be a dream.
In the story, Coathicarte serves as Phoron's partner and protector. As a Dantist, Phoron can harness the power of spirits through music, and Coatie is the source of his greatest strength. Their relationship is one of mutual dependence; her power is activated and amplified by his heartfelt performances, while his growth as a Dantist is inextricably linked to her influence and protection. Together, they work at Office Tsuge, a Divine Song Players Management Group, solving problems and conflicts that arise between humans and spirits.
Her key relationships revolve around Phoron, but she also has connections to other powerful beings. It is mentioned that she previously held a contract with another Dantist named Kuchiba Kaoru. She also shares a past acquaintance with Managariastinockle Lagu Edraikerius, a spirit from the Black series, and maintains a friendship with Eliphas Blanca Albiona, the White Holy Beast spirit.
Throughout the narrative, Coathicarte shows development primarily through her bond with Phoron. While her core traits of assertiveness and emotional volatility persist, her interactions with him and the human world force her to adapt. Her journey involves learning to coexist with humans, and her character arc is tied to the series central theme of mutual understanding between two different worlds.
Coathicartes notable abilities are intrinsically linked to the Divine Songs Phoron performs. In her transformed state, she gains access to staggering power, living up to her fearsome titles like the Crimson Annihilator. She possesses mastery over music-based magic, with specific talents including flame manipulation. Her power is such that she is not merely a spirit but a revered and feared entity known as the Red Goddess. Her full potential is realized when Phoron plays or sings, unleashing a performance that channels her magical energy into devastating effect.
