Kijimunaa, a yokai dwelling within the Chitama Forest on Izayoi Island, draws his existence and power from the magical Chitama Spiritual Stone located there. He appears as a short, brown-skinned creature with prominent nostrils, plump cheeks adorned with red spots, and very long red hair tied up with a rope; this hair often covers his small eyes, causing some to mistake his large nostrils for eyes. His distinctive design includes an "outie" navel, humanoid hands with five fingers, feet each possessing a single toe, and attire consisting of a leafy skirt secured by a rope belt, worn over a white brief or loincloth.
His personality blends thoughtfulness and wisdom with occasional cowardice, though he actively strives to overcome his fears to aid his friends. Possessing extensive knowledge of every yokai and every corner of Izayoi Island, he serves as an invaluable guide to its mystical secrets. He forged a close bond with the human girl Yuna and the alien experiment Stitch after they helped him reclaim his home tree from the bullying yokai Tachicchu, who had cheated during a sumo match to evict him; this event sparked their friendship and his recurring involvement in their adventures.
Kijimunaa possesses two primary supernatural abilities tied to his physiology. His most frequently demonstrated power is an immensely powerful sneeze generated by his highly sensitive nose, capable of producing forceful gusts that blow away adversaries or objects; this ability proved pivotal in defeating Tachicchu during their rematch. His second ability involves his tears, which hold unique healing properties. This was notably shown when his emotional distress over the injured experiment Sprout caused his tears to fall on the plant-like creature's wound, triggering instantaneous healing and restoring Sprout to his original size. The observer Pleakley attributed this healing to an emotional reaction rather than a chemical one.
His character design and mythological role are directly inspired by the kijimuna of Okinawan folklore, spirits or "tree ghosts" traditionally linked to banyan trees. These entities are described as child-sized with red hair, known for mischievous pranks, an aversion to octopuses, and occasional human friendships that often end poorly. This cultural foundation underpins his deep connection to the forest environment and the Spiritual Stone.
Kijimunaa's relationships extend beyond Yuna and Stitch to include other yokai and members of their extended group, though his interactions with his sibling Kijimagii resemble those with an annoying younger sister figure. While his cowardice surfaces in frightening situations, he consistently demonstrates loyalty and protective instincts toward his friends when they face threats, embodying the "Cowardly Lion" archetype where bravery emerges despite fear.
