Description
Lag Seeing is the central protagonist. Born on the Day of the Flicker, spirit amber implanted in his left eye socket at birth grants him unique abilities, appearing as a purple eye in the anime adaptation. This amber contains a spirit insect, requiring Lag to conceal the eye with his ghost-white hair. Standing 145 cm tall, he typically wears the standard Letter Bee uniform, adapting outfits for missions including cross-dressing disguises to infiltrate locations like Reverse's hideout or protect Sylvette Suede.
His early life in Coza Bel involved isolation until age seven, when Akatsuki agents abducted his mother Anne Seeing and burned their home. Left chained to a mail post, he was delivered by Letter Bee Gauche Suede to his aunt Sabrina Mary in Campbel Litus. This journey inspired Lag to become a Letter Bee, cementing Gauche as his role model. Five years later, Lag began his career, meeting his dingo Niche during his initial journey. He rescued her from abandonment at a train station and later from circus exploitation, forming an inseparable partnership. Niche fights using her prehensile hair blades and accompanies Lag alongside her pet Steak.
Professionally, Lag wields a Shindanjuu ("heart bullet gun"), firing "Akabari" needles that visualize memories within objects or targets. His spirit amber eye enhances this ability, enabling him to fire heart bullets directly from his palm without the gun. As a Letter Bee, he prioritizes understanding the emotional significance behind deliveries, often exceeding duties to resolve recipients' personal struggles, contrasting with colleagues adhering strictly to protocol. Key traits include extreme empathy, frequent crying during emotional moments, and determination to uphold promises. His core motivations are becoming Head Bee, reuniting with his mother in Akatsuki, and restoring Gauche Suede's lost memories.
Lag's relationships drive his development. His bond with Gauche Suede persists after Gauche's disappearance and reappearance as the amnesiac Reverse operative "Noir." Despite Noir's hostility, Lag believes fragments of Gauche remain, leading him to risk his life firing a specialized heart bullet to restore Gauche's memories. This partially succeeds by imparting Lag's memories of Gauche rather than restoring Gauche's own. He shares a close familial connection with Gauche's sister Sylvette Suede, promising to reunite her with her brother and later inheriting Gauche's Shindanjuu, Nocturne #20.
Later story arcs reveal Lag's origin as an entity created from the artificial sun's heart, sustained by the spirit amber. This connection fuels his final mission to destroy the Gaichuu Splitus, which manifests as the sun's eye and steals human hearts. Understanding this mission may require self-sacrifice, Lag informs friends of his resolve before departing. In the manga conclusion, he destroys the Gaichuu and restores AmberGround's natural sun, confirming his willingness for heroic sacrifice.
