Description
Kōtarō Inugami is a dog half-demon, or hanyō, introduced in the story as one of three mercenary children working alongside Chigusa Amagasaki in Kyoto. He is physically characterized by pointed ears and a furry tail, marking his non-human lineage. Despite his young age, he is a hotheaded and fiercely independent individual who operates on a self-styled warrior code. He possesses a strong sense of chivalry and refuses to seriously fight women unless they are exceptionally powerful opponents. This personal honor code, combined with a deep distrust of Western-style magic, shapes many of his early interactions. Negi Springfield is a notable exception to his aversion to Western magic.

Inugami's background is marked by profound loneliness. Being a half-demon, he was rejected from birth by both human and dog yōkai communities, leaving him without a sense of belonging. This isolation drives his desire for strength and self-reliance. His motivations gradually shift from simply proving his superiority in combat to valuing the bonds he forms. He seeks out Negi initially as a rival, seeing in him the only person his age who can match him in battle, but this rivalry deepens into a close and supportive friendship.

His role in the story begins as an antagonist during the Kyoto arc, where he is hired to hinder Negi and Asuna. After his defeat, he is taken into custody by the Kansai Magic Association, and his powers are sealed. He escapes to find Negi for a rematch but becomes entangled in a fight with a demon named Graf Hermann. During this encounter he is injured and afflicted with amnesia, and is taken in by two of Negi's students, Chizuru Naba and Natsumi Murakami, who initially believe he is a stray dog. After recovering and helping to defeat the demon, he is pardoned and his abilities are restored. He subsequently transfers to Mahora Academy's elementary school and begins living with Chizuru, Natsumi, and Ayaka Yukihiro under the assumed identity of Kotarō Murakami, Natsumi's younger brother.

Key relationships include his friendly rivalry with Negi, whom he comes to respect deeply. He holds the ninja Kaede Nagase in high regard due to her strength, and he looks to her as a mentor. Chizuru's maternal and affectionate treatment of him frequently embarrasses him, and he forms a protective bond with Natsumi. His straightforward views often lead to arguments with Yue Ayase, which he usually loses.

Over the course of the story, Inugami undergoes significant development. Initially naive about anything outside of combat, he slowly learns to navigate emotions and relationships, though he remains largely ignorant when it comes to girls. After a humiliating defeat in a martial arts tournament at the hands of Alberio, he questions his own worth as a warrior and fears losing Negi's acknowledgment. Kaede helps him through this crisis, offering to train with him, allowing him to reconcile with Negi. Later, when traveling to the Magic World, his role expands into a reliable and capable combatant. He accompanies Negi into the Magic World, participates in tournaments under the alias Kojiro, and fights alongside him against the forces of Fate.

Inugami's notable abilities center on the Garyū Inugami-ryū, a self-taught fighting style. He is an expert in ninjutsu and the use of enchanted paper charms. His half-demon nature grants him the power to summon dog spirits known as inugami, which he can use for ranged attacks, restraining opponents, or forming into wheels beneath his feet to achieve self-propelled flight. He can also partially transform into a more bestial form, enhancing his canine traits like a werewolf, or use a paper charm to fully transform into a small black and white dog. He relies heavily on close-quarters hand-to-hand combat, using ki energy, and he prefers direct physical engagement over ranged magic. He has a keen analytical mind and is adept at dissecting an opponent's technique, a skill that helps him keep pace with more formally trained fighters. His powers were temporarily sealed by the Kansai Magic Association, but were fully restored after he proved his loyalty.
