Description
Gouta Midorikawa is a teenage boy living in Tokyo who is drawn into a magic training program. His first meeting with Sora Suzuki happens during a chaotic incident at Akasakamitsuke station, where he is almost hit by a truck while trying to help an elderly woman. Sora uses her magic to avert the disaster, an act that sparks their future encounters.

He carries himself with a dismissive and sullen attitude, showing little interest in his peers and resisting any form of connection. This extends to his dealings with instructors and occasionally even clients, whom he does not hesitate to confront. Beneath this hostile exterior lies a fundamentally helpful and conscientious nature. A significant emotional barrier and a refusal to talk about his past contribute to his aloof demeanor.

This behavior stems from a deep dissatisfaction with his own magical abilities and his magical heritage. He recently learned he inherited his potential from his father, and his parents' separation remains a source of pain. A central part of his character is his profound struggle to control his magic, despite possessing extensive theoretical knowledge from studying many textbooks. This inability makes him doubt his qualification to be a mage and feeds a fear of failing like his father. His true passion is surfing, an activity he loves above all else, and he dreams of becoming a professional surfer.

His magical journey is marked by this internal conflict. For a long time, he appears to be an inept mage, seemingly incapable of performing magic while his classmates advance. Yet his theoretical expertise is considerable and exceeds that of his peers.

A pivotal element of his growth is his relationship with Sora. Her persistent attempts to reach him slowly break down his defenses. He also has a specific magical ability to create and project detailed mental worlds, which he uses to fulfill a significant promise to Sora after her death, showing her the ocean he had seen.

After a five-year time skip, he is shown to have gained control over his magic and has matured into a capable and licensed mage.
