Description
Clyde Bettany was an Earth Federation technical officer assigned to the experimental RTX-440 Ground Assault Type Guntank project. His apparent defection to the Principality of Zeon involved delivering classified project information, directly triggering its cancellation by Federation authorities and the unjust life imprisonment of his romantic partner, Aline Nazon, blamed for the security breach.

This defection, however, was a cover for Bettany's true role as a Federation double agent. He deliberately sacrificed the RTX-440 to build credibility within Zeon's military hierarchy, enabling deep cover infiltration of their command structure. This assignment placed him aboard a Zeon Dabude-class land battleship during the Battle of Odessa.

Stationed on the Dabude, Bettany encountered Aline Nazon piloting one of the remaining RTX-440 prototypes after her prison release. Recognizing the Guntank and its pilot, he urgently radioed her. He expressed relief she hadn't been executed, apologized for his actions, revealed his true allegiance and mission, and implored her to cease her attack, citing concealed Federation orders protecting his position.

Aline, driven by vengeance and unaware of his undercover status, rejected his pleas. She initiated the Guntank's self-destruction sequence, destroying both her prototype and the Dabude-class battleship carrying Bettany.

Following their deaths, a supernatural entity known as the Death Deity or Goddess of Death appeared before Aline's spirit. It confirmed Bettany had remained a loyal Federation operative, his defection a calculated ruse for infiltration. The entity further clarified that Federation command had explicitly ordered Aline not to attack that specific Dabude unit precisely because Bettany was aboard performing his clandestine mission.
