Description
Dr. Hiriluk, a self-proclaimed doctor on Drum Island, began life as a thief. Diagnosed with a terminal illness in his youth, he experienced a transformation upon seeing blooming cherry trees in a western country, believing they miraculously cured him. This convinced him no disease was incurable. He returned to Drum Island determined to heal its people, especially their "frozen hearts" caused by King Wapol's oppressive rule. His unorthodox and often harmful medical practices earned him a reputation as a quack. Wapol's "Doctor Hunt" decree left Hiriluk and Dr. Kureha among the few independent physicians, though his treatments frequently worsened patients' conditions.

Eight years before the main events, during a blizzard, Hiriluk discovered Tony Tony Chopper, a young reindeer ostracized by his herd for his blue nose and human-like intelligence gained from the Human-Human Fruit. To earn the injured reindeer's trust, Hiriluk removed his clothes in the freezing cold, proving he carried no weapons. He adopted Chopper as a surrogate son. They traveled together to treat patients, though their methods often led to chaotic escapes due to ineffective remedies. Despite arguments, Hiriluk nurtured Chopper's interest in medicine and instilled values of compassion and perseverance.

When Hiriluk's terminal illness resurfaced, he deliberately drove Chopper away by firing a rifle near him, exploiting Chopper's trauma from past gun violence to spare him from witnessing his decline. Unaware of Hiriluk's condition, Chopper retrieved the rare Amiudake mushroom, believing it medicinal. Hiriluk recognized it as poisonous but consumed it to honor Chopper's effort and devotion. The poison invigorated him temporarily, allowing him to declare his life's work—creating cherry blossoms capable of blooming in Drum's snow—complete.

Wapol later lured Hiriluk to the royal castle by falsely claiming the royal physicians, the Isshi-20, were gravely ill. Knowing it was a trap, Hiriluk went willingly. Upon seeing the doctors unharmed, he expressed tearful relief. Confronted by Wapol, he delivered a final speech declaring that a person dies only when forgotten. To protect Chopper from guilt over the poisoning and deny Wapol his capture, Hiriluk detonated explosives concealed in his coat, committing suicide. His death inspired the Isshi-20 to defy Wapol and dedicate themselves to genuine healing.

Hiriluk entrusted his unfinished cherry blossom formula to Dr. Kureha. Years later, during the Straw Hat Pirates' events, Kureha launched the formula into the sky, creating a pink snowfall resembling cherry blossoms. This fulfilled Hiriluk's dream of symbolically healing the island's emotional wounds, leading the populace to rename Drum Island the Sakura Kingdom in his honor. His philosophy and sacrifice profoundly influenced Chopper's path to becoming a doctor; Chopper consistently regarded him as the "greatest physician in the world."
