Description
Ryoko Matsuzaki is the widowed wife of Yuichiro Sawamura and mother to Umi, Sora, and Riku Matsuzaki, residing with her family at Matsuzaki Manor overlooking Yokohama's port.

Her marriage to sailor Yuichiro Sawamura caused familial conflict, her parents disapproving of the dangerous profession and lack of support. Defying their objections, Ryoko left home to live with Sawamura. They had three children before his death during the Korean War when his supply ship struck a water mine and sank. Following this tragedy, Ryoko and her children moved in with her grandparents. After her grandfather's passing, she inherited Matsuzaki Manor.

Pursuing a career in medicine, Ryoko traveled to the United States for advanced training and research. During her extended absence, her eldest daughter Umi managed the household and cared for the younger siblings. Ryoko established herself as a physician with proficiency in medical practice and bilingual abilities in Japanese and English.

She returned to Japan during the events of 1964. Upon arriving at Matsuzaki Manor, Umi immediately informed her about Shun Kazama and the confusion regarding his potential familial relationship. Ryoko clarified this by recounting Shun's adoption: Yuichiro Sawamura brought Shun—an infant whose mother died in childbirth and whose father, Hiroshi Tachibana, perished in a postwar repatriation ship accident—to the Kazama family. Sawamura registered Shun as his own son to prevent him from going to an overwhelmed orphanage, though Shun was later adopted by the Kazamas. This revelation resolved the uncertainty surrounding Shun and Umi's connection.

Physically, Ryoko bears a strong resemblance to her daughter Umi, with similar facial features and dark brown hair. Her younger self closely mirrored Umi's appearance, while her present hairstyle reflects similarities with her younger daughter Sora. In daily life, she actively participates in household management, such as unpacking upon her return and handling chores the morning after reconciling with Umi.
