Description
Yoshio Onodera is a sea captain and former colleague of Hiroshi Tachibana and Yūichirō Sawamura, serving alongside both men in the Japanese merchant marine during the postwar period. The three formed a close friendship, captured in a photograph showing them together in uniform with Tachibana seated centrally as their commanding officer.
Following the deaths of Tachibana in a repatriation ship accident shortly after World War II and Sawamura when his vessel struck a mine during the Korean War, Onodera became the sole survivor of the trio. He maintained connections to their families, possessing personal knowledge of their circumstances, and was present during the birth of Shun Kazama, witnessing the death of Shun's mother in childbirth.
In 1963, Onodera plays a critical role in resolving the central relationship conflict between Umi Matsuzaki and Shun Kazama. After Umi's mother reveals Shun is not biologically related to Sawamura, Umi and Shun seek Onodera for confirmation. He delays his ship, the Koyo Maru Yokohama, departing Yokohama by fifteen minutes to personally receive them aboard.
