Description
Melty Q. Melromarc is the second princess of the Kingdom of Melromarc and, despite being the younger daughter, holds the primary position as the first in line for the throne. This unusual succession is a direct result of her older sister Malty’s problematic and malicious personality, which made her unfit to rule. Her mother, Queen Mirellia Q. Melromarc, recognizing the failings in her firstborn’s upbringing, took personal responsibility for Melty’s education, grooming her from a young age to be the future queen.
In terms of appearance, Melty is depicted as being in her early teens, around the same age as her companion Filo. She has dark blue hair typically styled into twin tails, which she fastens with blue ribbons, with two strands left to frame her face. Her wardrobe, as befitting a noble, often consists of dresses in shades of blue and white, complete with a blue corset and a matching ribbon tied around her neck. Unlike many noblewomen, she wears dark practical shoes instead of heels, which allows her to move more easily.
Melty’s personality is defined by a strong sense of responsibility and the diplomatic wisdom she has absorbed from her mother. She prioritizes dialogue over conflict and is shown to be a capable mediator, even in tense political situations. She does not blindly follow the discriminatory religious beliefs common in Melromarc, which gives her a more open-minded perspective. However, due to her age, she can still be easily irritated, and her more childish and playful side tends to emerge when she is with her best friend, Filo. This contrast is also present in her relationship with Naofumi Iwatani, the Shield Hero; her earnest and formal nature often clashes with his cynical and pragmatic attitude, though this conflict ultimately builds a deep foundation of mutual trust between them.
Her primary motivations evolve from a sense of duty into a personal conviction. Initially sent by her mother to mediate between her father, King Aultcray, and the Shield Hero, Melty’s journey with Naofumi serves as a brutal awakening. Traveling with him and witnessing firsthand the horrific treatment of demi-human slaves by the nobles of her own country solidifies her resolve to create a Melromarc where humans and demi-humans can coexist peacefully.
Melty’s role in the story is multifaceted. She acts as a political counterbalance to her corrupt sister and father, using her royal authority to shield Naofumi from immediate danger. She is a key figure in the political landscape of the world, and her character often serves as a bridge between Naofumi’s party and the higher echelons of power. Her relationship with her sister, Malty, is antagonistic; Malty repeatedly attempts to have Melty assassinated to secure the throne for herself and is willing to cause widespread destruction to achieve this goal. In contrast, her relationship with her mother is one of mentorship and deep respect, and she shares a loving bond with her father, even as she disagrees with his actions. Her most significant personal relationship is with Filo, the Filolial Queen, whom she considers her best friend.
Melty undergoes significant development, transforming from a somewhat sheltered princess into a strong and decisive leader. After her mother is dealt a mortal blow, she ascends to the throne as the young Queen of Melromarc. Despite her grief and the heavy burden of responsibility, she maintains her composure and leads her kingdom against powerful threats. While she possesses a strong sense of duty, she has little personal desire for power, often complaining about the heavy workload that comes with ruling and using inspections as an excuse to visit Naofumi’s village to relax.
Notable abilities
Unlike her companions who specialize in physical combat, Melty’s strengths lie in her magical aptitude and administrative talents. She is a skilled mage with affinities for water and earth magic, specializing in the water attribute. Her magical repertoire includes offensive spells like Zweite Aqua Shot, which fires a ball of water, and Drifa Aqua Slash, which creates a blade of water. She can also use utility spells such as Zweite Squall to summon a rainstorm and First Aqua Heal for minor healing. Furthermore, she is capable of powerful cooperative magic, combining her abilities with allies like Filo to cast spells such as Typhoon, a powerful tornado of rain and hail, and Saint Rain, a holy rain that counters curses. Beyond combat, Melty is a gifted administrator and politician, having learned governance from her mother. She is also a capable musician, often providing music for Filo’s concerts.
