Shizuka Dōmeki emerges as a central figure whose background and development unfold throughout the narrative. Initially presented as a high school student residing at a Buddhist temple with his family, he maintains greater emotional distance from his parents than from his late grandfather, Haruka Dōmeki, a Shinto priest who imparted deep knowledge of folklore and spiritual practices during his childhood. His mother, Shino Dōmeki, is kind and supportive, showing genuine interest in his social life, such as preparing for his friends' visits.
Dōmeki possesses innate spiritual abilities inherited through his bloodline, including a natural aura that repels harmful spirits while refreshing benign ones. He channels his pure energy into exorcising spirits using a bow, the essential tool required to project invisible arrows of purifying energy. Initially unable to see spirits clearly, he could only sense their presence as atmospheric pressure. His spiritual perception undergoes significant evolution following a pivotal event: sacrificing half the spiritual essence and vision of his right eye to save Kimihiro Watanuki from a spider's curse. This act forges a permanent, supernatural link, allowing Dōmeki to occasionally see through Watanuki's right eye, particularly during moments of intense emotion.
His personality contrasts sharply with Watanuki's; he exhibits a consistently calm, stoic, and often sarcastic demeanor, speaking minimally except when explaining folklore or requesting elaborate, seasonally impossible meals from Watanuki. Despite this reserved exterior, he demonstrates deep loyalty and protectiveness. This is evidenced through actions like waiting for hours in the rain to ensure Watanuki's safety or donating large amounts of blood to save his life. His protective instinct extends to others, such as offering similar safeguarding to Kohane Tsuyuri after helping rescue her from an abusive home situation.
A significant aspect of his development involves his complex relationship with Watanuki. Their connection deepens from initial friction into a profound, albeit often unspoken, bond marked by mutual sacrifice. Dōmeki's unacknowledged emotional turmoil surfaces explicitly in "Rō Adayume" ("Selfish Dream"), where repressed desires manifest as a nightmare. This dream, reflecting his innermost longings, traps Watanuki within symbolic cages, grasping hands, and devouring shadows, representing Dōmeki's internal conflict. His realization that acting on these selfish desires would harm Watanuki's future necessitates Watanuki entering the nightmare to break free, highlighting Dōmeki's struggle between his feelings and his friend's well-being.
Yūko Ichihara grants him a significant artifact—an egg from Sakura with ambiguous properties. She instructs him that nothing will hatch from it, but he must use it for an important, unspecified future decision. This egg remains in his possession for decades, symbolizing unresolved aspects of his destiny.
Following Yūko's disappearance, his life progresses significantly. Four years later, he attends university studying ancient history and frequently visits Watanuki, who remains confined to the wish-granting shop. Dōmeki assists with external tasks and provides essential supplies. By six years post-Yūko, he graduates and works as a university assistant. He eventually marries Kohane Tsuyuri, whom he met through Watanuki, and delivers his wedding invitation to Watanuki. Their union produces a descendant, Sayaka Dōmeki, who becomes Watanuki's assistant over a century later. The egg Yūko gave him is passed down through his family lineage, remaining with Sayaka, indicating its enduring significance.
