Description
Miyashita, a student in class 6-3, firmly considers herself the class's most normal and well-adjusted member, a self-image constantly challenged by her peers' perception of her persistent, clumsy attempts to befriend the reclusive Hitoha Marui. Standing as the tallest student in class, her height contributes to her self-consciousness. Her appearance features light brown hair in the anime and dark orange hair in the manga, with matching eye color. She typically wears her long, mid-back length hair secured by a large clip at the back of her head, sweeping her bangs to one side with two distinctive hairpins and leaving two shoulder-length strands framing her face. Without these signature hairpins, she becomes unrecognizable to classmates, even close friends. Her "Miya-style" sporty fashion includes polo shirts, tank tops, hooded sweatshirts or jackets, mini-skirts, and white knee-high sports socks. While her friend Miku Sugisaki criticizes this look as unfeminine, Miyashita defends it as practical and personally satisfying.

Combining a laid-back demeanor with logical thinking, Miyashita deliberately positions herself as the primary straight man (tsukkomi), reacting to classmates' absurdities to assert her normalcy. However, deep-seated insecurities—about her height, lack of presence, and others' opinions—frequently trigger overreactions in minor situations, leading to awkward or desperate behavior that contradicts her intended image. She struggles with social cues, often making inappropriate or insensitive remarks without realizing their impact, causing unintended offense. Her attempts to act as a voice of reason during misunderstandings are routinely ignored. She displays a lack of conventional femininity, justifying habits like sitting with her legs open while wearing skirts as acceptable in all-female settings.

Athletically gifted, Miyashita excels in sports, particularly basketball, where she plays defense for the Kamohashi Orions district team and claims the self-proclaimed title "Demon of Defense." Her skills are acknowledged by peers like Mitsuba Marui. However, she occasionally neglects practice, leading to complacency and disciplinary actions like being benched. Academically, she performs poorly, with report cards showing mostly below-average (2s) or average (3s) grades, except for a top score (5) in health and physical education, likely related to sexual education. She scored 50 out of 100 on a test.

Her closest bond is with Yuki Yoshioka, her best friend since early childhood. Miyashita treasures the affectionate nickname "Miya-chan," seeing it as a symbol of their unique connection. She is fiercely protective of Yoshioka, having defended her from bullies and often comforting her. Miyashita also experiences jealousy when Yoshioka's attention shifts. She maintains a long-standing, albeit clashing, friendship with Miku Sugisaki; Sugisaki finds Miyashita's retorts grating, while Miyashita's laid-back approach contrasts Sugisaki's assertiveness. Despite friction, they frequently socialize with Yoshioka.

Miyashita's most persistent effort is her determined, yet perpetually unsuccessful, quest to befriend Hitoha Marui. Intrigued by Hitoha's antisocial behavior, she initiated contact in manga Chapter 70 and anime Episode 12. Her attempts consistently fail due to social missteps. A recurring gag involves Hitoha and others forgetting or mangling the second half of her name ("Miya—"), a major source of irritation. Hitoha deliberately emphasizes the wrong syllables, increasing her frustration. In one anime episode, Miyashita tried bonding over Hitoha's interest in the Gachi Rangers, but her lack of genuine knowledge—claiming to like the nonexistent "Gachi Green"—angered Hitoha. Her persistent, clumsy overtures reinforce Hitoha's coldness, yet she remains undeterred.

A running gag emphasizes her struggle for recognition as peers forget or misremember her name. Her dialogue often ends with the boyish particle "ぞ" (zo), and in the manga, a white star (☆) punctuates sentences when she says something unintentionally annoying. The sound effect "そよ" (soyo), meaning "breezy," became associated with her after Mitsuba deemed an innocuous comment about enjoying summer heat irritating. Miyashita's blood type is O, and her zodiac sign is Cancer.
