Description
Mayumi Katō is a supporting character from the anime and manga series Mitsudomoe. She is a student at Kamohashi Elementary School, attending class 6-3 alongside her classmates. Her appearance is marked by her dark hair, which she typically wears in a ponytail, and her somewhat plain and reserved visual presentation. Among her peers, she stands out as being taller than average, though she lacks athletic ability.

Katō is a member of a trio of girls known informally as the Hopeless Squad, a group formed around their shared and intense affection for a male classmate named Satō. Alongside Airi Ogata and Shiori Itō, Katō harbors a deep romantic attachment to Satō, and much of her behavior within the series revolves around this infatuation. Despite this common bond, Katō is often distinguished from her two companions as the most level-headed and grounded member of the trio. In contrast to the more overtly eccentric or obsessive actions of Ogata and Itō, Katō tends to act as a straight man or voice of reason within the group, often reacting with concern or embarrassment at the more extreme antics of her friends. This has led to her being described as the normal or sensible one among the three, and the tagline associated with her character emphasizes her nature as a sensible person in love.

Her motivation is primarily driven by her love for Satō, which she pursues with a dedicated, if often misguided, earnestness. While she is not as outwardly unhinged as her fellow squad members, she still participates in their group activities, which often involve stalking, surveillance, and other obsessive behaviors directed at Satō. However, her sense of normalcy sometimes causes her to be unable to keep up with the more bizarre actions of Ogata and Itō, highlighting her role as the more grounded counterbalance within the squad.

Within the story, Katō serves as a secondary character whose interactions primarily center on the Hopeless Squad's dynamic and their comedic attempts to get closer to Satō. Her relationships are defined by her connection to the group. She serves as a loyal friend and a stabilizing influence on Ogata and Itō, often worrying about Ogata's behavior or trying to prevent her from doing something too extreme. Beyond her squad members, her relationship with Satō himself is one-sided, as he generally finds the trio's behavior bizarre and frightening, and does not distinguish between them. She also interacts occasionally with other classmates, including the Marui triplets, Mitsuba, Futaba, and Hitoha, who are the central protagonists of the series.

In terms of notable abilities, Katō is shown to have an unusually acute sense of smell, which is portrayed as the keenest among the Hopeless Squad. This ability is sometimes used in their attempts to track or locate Satō. However, her physical abilities are limited, as she is established to be poor at sports. Her character does not undergo significant dramatic development over the course of the series, as she primarily functions as a consistent comedic supporting player within the ongoing slice-of-life and gag-driven narrative. Her role remains largely defined by her position as the comparatively normal and emotionally earnest member of a group dedicated to an obsessive romantic pursuit.
