Description
Koichi Tanemura is Ohana Matsumae's childhood friend from their Tokyo middle school days, a relationship built on mutual reliance and shared city experiences. Before Ohana's sudden move to her grandmother's hot springs inn, Koichi confesses his romantic feelings to her. He departs immediately afterward, leaving her no chance to respond and creating unresolved tension that lingers after their separation.

Koichi displays kindness and patience, though he often struggles with indecisiveness and indirect communication. Ohana perceives his roundabout approach as thoughtfulness rather than hesitation. After Ohana moves away, he feels abandoned as she becomes immersed in her new life. This distance is palpable when he attempts to visit her at the inn but leaves without making contact after witnessing its chaotic environment.

Their relationship grows more complex during Ohana's Tokyo visit. Koichi rejects advances from a female coworker, explicitly stating his ongoing affection for someone else – implicitly Ohana. They share a dinner where they briefly recapture their former camaraderie, but their interaction ends abruptly when Ohana leaves unexpectedly, underscoring the lingering awkwardness. Communication challenges peak when Ohana acknowledges her feelings and tries to express them over the phone. Koichi replies with a noncommittal "See ya," which Ohana interprets as potential rejection, causing significant emotional strain. It is later clarified this response did not constitute a full rejection of her feelings.

Koichi's perspective shifts after viewing a video that showcases Ohana's dedication and growth at the inn, reinforcing his enduring affection and understanding of her changed circumstances. By the series conclusion, their relationship resolves when Ohana formally confesses her feelings. They reconcile and begin dating, establishing themselves as an official couple.

His name, Koichi, combines "filial piety, obedience" (孝) and "one" (一). His surname, Tanemura, derives from "seed, species" (種) and "town, village" (村). Ohana uses the affectionate nickname "Kou-chan," reflecting their deep bond.
