Description
Kenzo Hyoudo, a recurring character in the Battle Spirits franchise, debuts at age nine during the Grand Rolo Championship. A proven tournament winner, he wields a green deck built around his key X-rare spirit, The BladeKingBeast Byak-Garo. His initial drive to become an invincible card battler appears selfish during the championship finals. After defeat, he forms a reluctant alliance with the core soldiers. He shows concern for Kajitsu Momose upon seeing her green symbol, urging travel to the green world to help her. His strategy falters against Leon, who exploits Kenzo's tactical oversight by using multiple colors. Discovering Leon planted a tracking device fuels Kenzo's anger and desire for a rematch.
Despite significant fear, he commits to the core soldiers' plan to destroy the Grand Cores of the Horizon Ladders, facing and defeating a green Pantera robot. He aids in reclaiming Magisa's deck on Earth and partners with Mai to implant a temporary shutdown virus into military systems aligned with the Otherworld King, utilizing secret contacts. During the final battle, he lends Dan his Byak-Garo card.
By future events at age eleven, Kenzo works as a scientist alongside Stella Korabelishchikov. He researches the impending Earth reset caused by the mazoku continent Oct and investigates the Otherworld Observation Records. This research uncovers the legend of the 12 Zodiac X-rares as tools to prevent catastrophe. While less focused on regular battling, he accepts a challenge from Plym to disprove her assumption of his weakness, easily defeating her due to her inexperience and his possession of three Byak-Garo cards. Plym develops romantic feelings, which Kenzo acknowledges with a warning about potential consequences.
His scientific contributions include assisting in the care and analysis of the injured Barone, leading to the discovery of identical DNA in humans and mazoku. He helps locate the arctic shrine necessary for activating the 12 Zodiac X-rares using the Otherworld Records. Realizing Dan must become the "trigger" to activate the X-rares' power, he later returns to his own time in the epilogue, expressing readiness to face the past alongside Mai and Suzuri.
In manga adaptations, his role is smaller. Within the Gekiha Dan manga, he appears as a minor antagonist teaming up with Leon in a tag battle against Mai and Kazan, ending in defeat. The Brave manga largely retains his anime scientific role, though he works alone as Stella does not appear.
Visually, Kenzo has blueish-green hair and matching eyes. His initial attire features a ladybug-decorated yellow headband, a green and white shirt, plaid shorts, and long yellow socks. His battle form is yellow and resembles a horned creature's skull. In the future, he wears glasses, a red and yellow shirt, blue shorts, and a white lab coat. The ladybug decoration moves to a necklace, and his headband loses the ladybugs. Later, he adopts a bobcut hairstyle and outfits like a plaid-brown collared shirt under a pink-and-green long-sleeved shirt with a yellow line, paired with white pants, though he occasionally reverts to the headband.
Personality-wise, he often displays maturity beyond his years but retains childish traits, including being easily frightened and prone to angry tantrums when provoked or defeated. He exhibits impatience and is recognized as a genius. His character develops significantly from his initial selfish wish towards commitment to collective goals, teamwork, and vital scientific contributions to prevent Earth's reset.
His documented battle outcomes include wins against Clackey and a possessed Suzuri during the championship, losses to Dan and Leon (twice), a win against the Green Pantera robot, and a win against Plym in the future. His deck consistently features The BladeKingBeast Byak-Garo alongside various green spirits, nexuses, and magic cards like Amenborg, Machfly, Thorn Prison, and Potion Berry.
