Description
Cress serves as one of Striaton City's three Gym Leaders in the Unova region, alongside his brothers Cilan and Chili. Commanding Water-type Pokémon, he operates from the city's Gym, which also functions as a restaurant. Tall in stature, Cress has short blue hair featuring a longer fringe that covers his right eye and blue eyes. His attire consists of a white long-sleeved shirt, a black and gray waistcoat fastened with gold buttons, black pants, a white apron, brown pointed shoes with gold buckles, and a signature blue bow tie reflecting his Water-type expertise.
Personality-wise, Cress presents a typically cool and collected demeanor, though he can sometimes appear snobbish or overly talkative. More introverted than his brothers, he nonetheless demonstrates genuine concern for their well-being. His battle strategy emphasizes evasion and defense, exemplified by his Panpour's tactical use of Double Team and Mud Sport to gain advantages.
Cress first encounters Ash when the trainer arrives at the Striaton Gym. Together with Cilan and Chili, he explains their unique challenge structure where opponents choose a brother based on type matchups. After Ash insists on battling all three and Chili is defeated, Cress steps in as the second opponent. Utilizing Panpour against Ash's Pikachu, he outmaneuvers the type disadvantage by employing Double Team for evasion and Mud Sport to neutralize Electric-type moves, securing victory with Water Gun.
Later, Cress contacts Cilan to report Chili's departure following a disagreement. Cress had suggested Chili incorporate more defensive strategies into his battling style, advice Chili misinterpreted as criticism. Expressing concern for Chili's well-being, Cress seeks Cilan's help to resolve the situation. After Cilan assists Chili in refining his battle skills, Chili reconciles with Cress.
With both Cilan and Chili absent from the Gym, Cress assumes sole management duties. During this period, he and Chili face a challenge from Morana, who aims to seize control of the Gym. Following their defeat, Morana departs to find and defeat Cilan, dismissing Cress and Chili as "pathetic Gym Leaders." Cress contacts Cilan to warn him. When Morana confronts Cilan, Cress and Chili observe the ensuing battle, which results in her defeat. They then pledge to protect the Gym until Cilan's eventual return.
