Description
Ouma Yamisaka, a Japanese magician, emerges during the events of August 31. He maintains a formal appearance with his customary black suit and tie, his eyes perpetually closed except during moments of intense pain or emotion—a trait enabled by magically heightened senses that compensate for diminished faculties. His signature weapon is the Bow of Azusa (Azusayumi), a gauntlet-mounted crossbow-like instrument that triggers magical effects through sound when its string is plucked, rather than firing arrows.
Yamisaka’s quest originated in a hospital encounter with a terminally ill young woman marked by curses. Mistaking his attire for that of a funeral worker, she displayed quiet acceptance of her fate despite suffering, stirring profound feelings in him. Determined to save her, he pursued a cure through magic, framing his morally ambiguous actions as self-interest to avoid burdening her with guilt.
Targeting Index Librorum Prohibitorum for the Chinese grimoire *Baopuzi*—believed to hold a miracle cure—he used his Seeking Demon’s Bow String to locate her in Academy City. After kidnapping Index, he confined her to a rooftop and activated the Lantern Festival, a Shinto-Buddhist barrier amplifying his bow’s power to extract the grimoire. The ritual ravaged him physically and mentally. Through their psychic link, Index uncovered his self-sacrificial love and pleaded for him to stop. He persisted until Kamijou Touma shattered the ceremony, condemned his martyrdom, and proposed an alternative: negating the curse directly via Imagine Breaker. Overwhelmed, Yamisaka accepted. They departed Academy City, where Touma dispelled the curse.
Yamisaka’s magic revolves around the Bow of Azusa’s versatile techniques: Wind Demon’s Bow String crafts invisible air platforms for aerial mobility; Piercing Bullet’s Bow String launches transparent projectiles; Severing Demon’s Bow String unleashes slicing wind blades; Invisible Demon’s Bow String cloaks himself and companions; Confusing Demon’s Bow String distorts perceptions to create illusions. His Rope Binding Magic employs enchanted restraints for containment, forming barriers vulnerable to Imagine Breaker. These methods prioritize minimal collateral damage.
Beyond the Three Stories Arc, his legacy surfaces through fleeting references. Touma cited the rope-binding technique against Leivinia Birdway and once used Yamisaka’s ropes to subdue Index. Yamisaka also aided Touma’s re-entry to Academy City post-departure, though the assistance remains unspecified. Despite no physical reappearances, his narrative role underscores themes of sacrifice and moral complexity.
