Yamisaka Ouma is a Japanese magician specializing in traditional ritual magic. He typically wears a black suit and tie, his eyes consistently closed except during intense pain or strong emotion. This practice stems from magically enhanced physical senses, allowing him to function without relying on one or two senses. A distinctive magical azusayumi (catalpa bow) is mounted on his right hand, serving as his primary spellcasting instrument. This bow produces sounds rather than firing arrows, its vibrations manipulating spiritual and physical forces.
His path crossed with a hospitalized woman marked by a lethal magical curse. Facing imminent death, she displayed stoic acceptance, refusing to cry for help. Her resilience deeply affected Ouma, who fell in love with her. Determined to save her, he resolved to extract the Chinese grimoire *Baopuzi* from Index Librorum Prohibitorum, believing it held a formula for a miracle drug curing any illness.
