Description
Yamisaka Ouma is a Japanese magician specializing in traditional ritual magic. He typically wears a black suit and tie, his eyes consistently closed except during intense pain or strong emotion. This practice stems from magically enhanced physical senses, allowing him to function without relying on one or two senses. A distinctive magical azusayumi (catalpa bow) is mounted on his right hand, serving as his primary spellcasting instrument. This bow produces sounds rather than firing arrows, its vibrations manipulating spiritual and physical forces.

His path crossed with a hospitalized woman marked by a lethal magical curse. Facing imminent death, she displayed stoic acceptance, refusing to cry for help. Her resilience deeply affected Ouma, who fell in love with her. Determined to save her, he resolved to extract the Chinese grimoire *Baopuzi* from Index Librorum Prohibitorum, believing it held a formula for a miracle drug curing any illness. To justify his morally ambiguous actions—kidnapping and endangering others—he convinced himself he acted for selfish reasons rather than her sake, avoiding burdening her with his sins.

On August 31, Ouma infiltrated Academy City. Using his Seeking Demon's Bow String spell to locate Index across the entire city, he kidnapped her and retreated to a rooftop. There, he performed the Lantern Festival ritual, amplifying his bow's power to extract *Baopuzi*. During the ritual, Index intercepted his memories through their mental link, exposing his true motivations and love for the cursed woman. The grimoire's toxic knowledge caused severe physical deterioration, but he persisted despite Index's pleas. Kamijou Touma intervened, destroyed the ritual, and criticized Ouma for his self-sacrificial approach. Touma proposed using his Imagine Breaker ability to negate the curse directly. Ouma accepted this alternative, tearfully abandoning his plan. They left the city together, Touma successfully dispelling the curse.

Ouma's magic revolves around his azusayumi, enabling diverse spells through precise string vibrations: Wind Demon's Bow String creates invisible air platforms for high jumps; Piercing Bullet's Bow String fires transparent metal projectiles; Severing Demon's Bow String releases clustered wind blades resembling a miniature tornado; Invisible Demon's Bow String renders himself and carried objects invisible; Confusing Demon's Bow String influences perceptions to create illusions, though effectiveness varies by target. He also uses Rope Binding Magic, employing enchanted ropes for purification, binding, or torture, vulnerable to Imagine Breaker. The Lantern Festival establishes a barrier amplifying grimoire extraction and telepathy, with bidirectional mental access.

Following his initial appearance, Ouma is referenced in later events. Touma recalls his rope-binding techniques when restraining Index during unrelated incidents and utilizes knowledge of Ouma's barrier magic to strategize against other antagonists, though Ouma does not physically reappear beyond his introductory arc.
