Description
Kyōsuke Kōsaka is a 17-year-old high school student with black hair, black eyes, and a height of 175 cm. He maintains a plain appearance, favoring simple casual clothing that contrasts with his sister Kirino's style. Though physically average in build, others occasionally note his handsomeness despite his self-perception as ordinary.
His childhood depicted him as ambitious, outgoing, and athletically gifted, often declaring "Leave it to me." A pivotal hiking accident involving Akimi Sakurai shifted his outlook. Influenced by his childhood friend Manami Tamura, he adopted a philosophy of avoiding excessive effort, leading to diminished academic and athletic performance. This change contributed to estrangement from Kirino, who had previously admired him.
Initially, Kyōsuke shares a distant relationship with Kirino, facing consistent rudeness from her. This changes when he discovers her hidden adult game collection, revealing her secret life as an otaku obsessed with sister-themed eroge and anime. Reluctantly becoming her confidant, he agrees to "life consultations" to help her balance her hobby and social life. This role forces him into otaku subcultures he disdained, including Akihabara visits and events like Comiket.
Kyōsuke repeatedly sacrifices his reputation for Kirino. He claims ownership of her eroge when confronted by their father, enduring physical punishment and long-term relational damage. Later, he deliberately portrays himself as a "pervert" and "siscon" to Kirino's friend Ayase Aragaki to preserve their friendship. These acts gradually rebuild his sibling bond, evidenced by Kirino occasionally calling him "Aniki" (big brother).
His personality balances a laidback, conflict-averse approach with intense decisiveness during crises. Though generally calm, he exhibits fierce protectiveness over Kirino's interests. He possesses a noted fetish for glasses-wearing girls and often misinterprets romantic signals, causing friction. Despite claiming to desire a "normal life," his actions reveal growing attachment to Kirino's world, culminating in his acknowledgment as a "true siscon."
Throughout the series, Kyōsuke connects with Kirino's otaku friends: Saori Makishima (a wealthy moderator) and Ruri Gokō/Kuroneko (a gothic lolita–styled chuunibyou). His relationship with Kuroneko evolves romantically; they date briefly before breaking up. In light novels and anime, he later confesses feelings to Kirino, leading to a temporary romantic relationship and mock wedding before mutually reverting to "normal siblings," though implications of lingering affection persist. PSP visual novels depict alternate routes where he marries Kirino, Saori, Kuroneko, Ayase, Kanako Kurusu, or Manami, with Kirino's route resulting in children. The spin-off manga *Oreimo: Kuroneko* shows Kyōsuke marrying Kuroneko a decade later.
His development involves reconciling his past identity by re-embracing aspects of his determined childhood self through supporting Kirino. Post-graduation, he pursues a civil service career while maintaining otaku ties via the Game Research Club, which he joins with Kuroneko.
