Conscripted into the SPARTAN-II program at age six due to exceptional genetic potential, he underwent flash clone replacement before training on Reach under Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez and the AI Déjà. During training, he emerged as one of four primary leadership candidates alongside John-117, Kurt-051, and Jerome-092, demonstrating strategic aptitude and combat proficiency in simulated war games against units like Tango Company.
Successful augmentations on March 9, 2525, enabled his deployment on Operation: TALON in September 2525 as part of Blue Team under John-117. This inaugural combat operation captured Insurrectionist leader Colonel Robert Watts from the asteroid base Eridanus Secundus. Fred participated in early Covenant engagements, including the Battle of Chi Ceti IV where he received his first MJOLNIR armor.
