OVA
Description
Yomi Takanashi appears in multiple "Black Rock Shooter" continuities with distinct characterizations. Across both, she exhibits core traits: politeness, social awkwardness stemming from frequent relocations, and a tendency to internalize negative emotions. Her affluent background is evident through chauffeur-driven cars and large residences. Her surname "Takanashi" (小鳥遊) holds dual meanings: "little birds playing" (noted by Mato Kuroi) and "no hawks" (explained by Yomi). The name's connection to "underworld" (黄泉, "Yomi") thematically aligns with her Other Self, Dead Master, who wields chains and skulls in battle.

In the OVA, Yomi arrives at a Japanese junior high school after living in Germany. She quickly befriends the outgoing Mato Kuroi, bonding over shared interests like volleyball and exchanging matching star-shaped phone charms. When separated into different classes during their second year, Yomi grows isolated and jealous of Mato's new friendship with basketball manager Yuu Koutari. This jealousy manifests through Dead Master, who possesses her, causing her disappearance. Mato merges with Black★Rock Shooter to rescue her, culminating in a battle where Black★Rock Shooter embraces Dead Master, expelling her from Yomi's body. Post-reconciliation, Yomi accepts Yuu as a friend but remains unaware of Yuu's emerging darkness.

The 2012 TV anime reimagines Yomi. She wears glasses and belongs to the art club. Her backstory reveals a traumatic childhood incident: her friend Kagari Izuriha was hit by a car while chasing Yomi's departing family, leading Kagari to develop psychosomatic paralysis and obsessive dependence. Blaming herself, Yomi submits to Kagari's control, isolating herself until Mato initiates friendship. Their bond strengthens over a shared love for the book "The Little Bird and Her Million Colors," with Yomi gifting Mato a crocheted red bracelet. Kagari sabotages their friendship, culminating in Yomi self-harming under Kagari's coercion and carving a heart-shaped scar on her own chest. After Kagari recovers and gains independence, Yomi faces new turmoil as Mato's childhood friend Yuu reenters their lives. School counselor Saya Irino exacerbates Yomi's insecurities by implying she is replaceable. Yomi's jealousy and loneliness reach a breaking point, causing her to paint disturbing imagery and withdraw completely. Her emotional collapse awakens Dead Master in the "Other World," who is killed by Black★Rock Shooter (merged with Mato), erasing Yomi's memories of Mato. These memories later return, reviving Dead Master and enabling Yomi to aid Mato in defeating Insane Black★Rock Shooter. The series concludes with Yomi reconciling with Kagari and forming a friend group with Mato and Yuu.
