Description
Murasaki Kuhōin is the seven-year-old daughter of Souju and Renjo Kuhōin, born into one of the most powerful plutocratic families in Japan. Because the Kuhōin family maintains a tradition that its offspring must be of pure blood, female members are treated as objects for reproduction and confined to a facility known as the Inner Sanctuary. Murasaki’s mother, Souju, endured this life out of love for Renjo, and on her deathbed she begged Benika Jūzawa to one day fulfill a wish for her daughter. When Murasaki turned seven, she wished to fall in love just as her mother had, understanding that love was what sustained Souju through her imprisonment.

To honor that promise, Benika helped Murasaki escape the Inner Sanctuary and entrusted her to the care of Shinkurō Kurenai, a sixteen-year-old dispute mediator. Initially, Murasaki came across as stubborn, snobbish, and ignorant of the outside world, having been raised in complete isolation. Shinkurō, however, was quick to correct her behavior, and she learned to adjust to ordinary life, eventually trusting him deeply. She also formed friendships with other residents of the May Rain apartment building. Despite her sheltered upbringing, Murasaki possessed a sharp sense of justice; she could not tolerate unfairness and was willing to apologize and correct her mistakes when she realized she was wrong. She often referred to herself in the third person as “Murasaki,” a habit reflecting both her privilege and her gradual understanding of self.

Murasaki’s primary motivation is to experience love and freedom—two things the Kuhōin system denies its women. She grows very attached to Shinkurō, feeling jealous when he is close to other girls, and openly expresses her desire to marry him when she is older. Her development throughout the story is marked by a transition from a sheltered, haughty child to a more independent and emotionally aware individual who is able to voice her own choices. After being kidnapped and returned to the Inner Sanctuary, Shinkurō confronts the family and learns Murasaki’s true feelings. She declares that she does not want to live confined, and he rescues her. In the anime, the resolution sees Murasaki remaining in the Kuhōin mansion under the condition that the entire system be reformed and that she be given the freedom to choose her own partner.

Murasaki’s key relationships include Shinkurō, who becomes both her protector and the object of her affection, and Benika, the woman who enabled her escape. Her father, Renjo, and her elder brother, Ryūji, represent the oppressive traditions she must overcome. Her mother, Souju, though deceased, serves as the emotional anchor for her wish. While Murasaki does not possess supernatural combat abilities, she has a perceptive nature and an unusual talent for intuiting when others are lying, a skill that helps her navigate the deceptive world around her. Her quiet determination, emotional honesty, and willingness to grow make her a central figure in the story’s exploration of identity, freedom, and the meaning of love.
