Description
Baron Ashura from the anime "Mazinger Edition Z: The Impact!" is a complex antagonist whose origins lie in the distant past. Before becoming the fused being known to Dr. Hell, Ashura was two separate individuals: a pair of Mycenaean priests named Tristan and Isolde. They were loyal servants of the Mycenae Empire, an ancient civilization that ruled the Earth, and were close associates of Archduke Gorgon. Unlike their commander Zeus, who betrayed the empire to protect humanity, Tristan and Isolde looked down on humans and were involved in a plot against Zeus. For reasons lost to time, the two priests perished and their bodies were preserved as mummies, sealed away on the island of Bardos.
Millennia later, the mad scientist Dr. Hell and his assistant, Tsubasa Nishikiori, discovered the mummies. Noticing that one half of each body had decayed, they used a mysterious formula to dissolve the ruined halves and then stitched the remaining parts together, fusing the left side of the male Tristan with the right side of the female Isolde to create a single, living entity: Baron Ashura. However, upon awakening, the newly created Ashura violently attacked its creators, forcing Dr. Hell and Tsubasa to implant a command barrier in its brain, making it physically incapable of harming them. Forced into servitude, Ashura became Dr. Hell's first and most prominent lieutenant, tasked with leading his army of Mechanical Beasts and the Iron Mask corps to conquer Japan.
Baron Ashura possesses a striking and immediately recognizable appearance, reflecting its dual nature. The left side of its body is masculine, with darker skin and a thicker eyebrow, while the right side is feminine, with pale skin, makeup, and long hair. It typically wears a two-toned robe, with the left side being black and the right side purple. This physical duality is mirrored in its personality, which is torn between two powerful allegiances. On one hand, Ashura is fiercely loyal to Dr. Hell for granting it a second chance at life and is willing to die for him, often punishing itself for failures. On the other hand, its core identity as Tristan and Isolde means its deepest loyalty lies with the slumbering Mycenae Empire. This creates a profound internal conflict, as Ashura is horrified to see the Mechanical Beasts—which are actually reanimated Mycenaean soldiers—destroyed in battle.
As a villain, Ashura is manipulative, ruthless, and cunning. It has no qualms about using underhanded tactics, such as taking hostages like Sayaka Yumi to force Koji Kabuto to surrender the Mazinger Z. It has also proven to be a master of disguise, successfully infiltrating the Photonic Power Laboratory on multiple occasions by impersonating allies. Its strategic mind allows it to coordinate city-wide assaults with multiple Mechanical Beasts, and it consistently proves to be one of Koji's most dangerous and persistent enemies. Despite its effectiveness, Ashura is prone to overconfidence and is constantly struggling to earn Dr. Hell's approval, leading to a bitter rivalry with Dr. Hell's other lieutenant, Count Brocken, who frequently sabotages Ashura's plans to gain favor for himself.
The most significant turning point in Ashura's story occurs when it is forced into an uneasy alliance with its enemy, Koji Kabuto, to stop a rampaging creature called a Kedora. During a time-traveling mission to the past, Ashura confronts its own history as Tristan and Isolde and makes a devastating discovery: the decay on its original bodies was not natural. It was Dr. Hell who purposely dissolved the healthy halves of Tristan and Isolde, fusing the remains solely to create a servant who could guide him to the secrets of the Mycenae Empire. Enraged by this betrayal and the massacre of other sleeping Mycenaeans, Ashura's internal conflict is resolved. It turns completely against Dr. Hell, feigning an alliance with Koji and the Photonic Power Laboratory to achieve its own goal.
Baron Ashura is not just a commander but a formidable combatant in its own right. It wields the Bardos Wand, a staff that allows it to control any machine with an artificial brain circuit, including the Mechanical Beasts. Even without its wand, Ashura has displayed superhuman physical abilities, such as running on water and delivering strikes powerful enough to stagger the colossal Mazinger Z. Late in the series, after its body is heavily damaged, it is transformed into the Mechanical Beast Baron Ashura, a powerful flying unit made partly of Super Alloy Z that can fight on equal terms with Mazinger. In this form, it can separate its body to dodge attacks and use weapons like the Ashura Whip and Baron Needle.
Ultimately, Ashura's driving motivation is the resurrection of the Mycenae Empire. After Dr. Hell is defeated, Ashura betrays its temporary human allies and performs a final, self-sacrificial act. Tearing its own fused body apart, it uses its blood to open a portal, awakening the full might of the Mycenae Empire to claim the Earth once more. In this final moment, Baron Ashura achieves its true goal, giving its life not as a servant of Dr. Hell, but as a loyal priest of the ancient empire it was originally born to serve.
