Description
Tooru Taki, also spelled Tohru Taki, is a 15-year-old human character born on May 15 or 16. She stands 160 cm tall with blood type O, possessing short dusty blonde hair and light brown eyes, often noted for a cute and gentle appearance. She favors casual, feminine clothing.
Taki is fundamentally cheerful, friendly, extroverted, and optimistic. However, a youkai's curse initially forced her into silence, making her seem shy and introverted to avoid bringing misfortune to others. Once the curse is broken, she reverts to her naturally talkative and bright self. Determined and resourceful, she frequently involves herself in dangerous situations despite being unable to see youkai. Her deep knowledge of youkai, drawn from her grandfather's research, excites her, though she can be tactless and blunt, sometimes overlooking others' feelings. She has a particular fondness for cuteness, often cuddling Nyanko-sensei in his cat form.
She is the youngest child of the ancient and wealthy Taki family, descendants of former onmyoji. Her parents, often overseas and stern during her upbringing, were seldom present. Raised primarily by her grandfather, Shin'ichiro Taki, she shared his passion for youkai and folklore. Her older brother, Isamu, six years her senior, distanced himself from the family due to his aversion to the supernatural. After her grandfather's death when she was ten, Taki chose to stay in the family home rather than move abroad, living largely alone.
At fifteen, during her final year of middle school, Taki discovered a youkai circle in her grandfather's notes. Drawing it allowed humans to see any youkai stepping inside. Her frequent use of the circle led a youkai to curse her: it would consume the last thirteen names she had spoken after one year. The youkai later broke their agreement despite Taki winning their gamble.
While cursed, she first encountered Takashi Natsume at school. After accidentally saying his name, she apologized and fled. They formally met when Nyanko-sensei tripped her, prompting her introduction. Learning of her curse, Natsume and Nyanko-sensei helped seal the youkai, freeing her. Taki became one of Natsume's closest friends and one of the few humans aware of his ability to see youkai. She often aids him by researching youkai using her grandfather's materials, worries for his safety, and wishes he would rely more on his friends.
She met Kaname Tanuma during the school festival in the manga and the Kai arc in the anime. Bonding over concern for Natsume, they occasionally collaborate to assist him, such as confronting a youkai at her home or caring for Natsume when he was turned into a child. Both hope he will trust them more.
Taki adores Nyanko-sensei, calling him "Neko-chan" and cuddling him in cat form, which she finds irresistibly cute. Though he attempts to evade her affection, they maintain a friendly relationship. She restrains herself from hugging him only during serious moments or his transformations.
Her relationship with her brother, Isamu, is distant, with him rarely visiting. Her connection to her parents remains detached due to their absence, though she displays no outright resentment. She once briefly met Seiji Matoba when he paid respects to her grandfather at a memorial service.
In the anime, Taki becomes friends with Jun Sasada as part of Natsume's school circle, unlike the manga where Sasada moves away.
Though Taki lacks the spiritual energy to see youkai, she can draw intricate youkai circles inherited from her grandfather. These circles require no spiritual energy to activate and allow any human to see youkai within them. She is likely the only person who can draw them without a guide due to their complexity. She also knows other spells and seals from her grandfather's research, such as those protecting her house. In later developments, she expresses interest in studying onmyoji arts through her grandfather's books, gradually learning youkai lore and ancient spells despite her fearful history with the curse.
