Description
Centuries-old vampire Evangeline Athanasia Katherine McDowell (often abbreviated Evangeline A.K. McDowell) possesses the physical form of a 10-year-old girl, standing 130 cm tall with blonde hair and blue eyes. Her aging ceased upon becoming a Shinso (True Blood Vampire) through sorcery on her tenth birthday amidst the Hundred Years' War (1337–1453), rendering her chronologically over 600 years old. Originally human and possibly of Scottish royalty, she fled her home after discovering her vampiric nature and unintentionally feeding on a castle resident.
The Mage of the Beginning created her vampiric state during immortality experiments. Following centuries of wandering, including surviving being burned at the stake, Nagi Springfield cursed her using the Infernus Scholasticus (School Hell) spell. This curse confined her to Mahora Academy's grounds and restricted her powers, with Nagi promising freedom upon graduation—a promise nullified by his disappearance five years later. She subsequently acted as a security informant for Dean Konoemon Konoe. Initially antagonistic toward Nagi's son, Negi Springfield, she claimed draining his blood could break her curse. She later shifted to a mentorship role, training Negi in magical combat in exchange for daily blood payments, revealing a complex morality balancing cruelty with latent kindness from her human past.
Her abilities encompass Shinso vampire traits: immortality, regeneration, sunlight tolerance, and transformations into mist or bats. As a master ice and dark mage, she wields spells like *Kosmike Katastrophe* (absolute zero temperatures) and *Ensis Exsequens* (matter vaporization). She also utilizes Magia Erebea to absorb spells for power augmentation, puppetry via invisible strings (controlling up to 300 dolls), and pocket dimensions like her training resort. Key weaknesses include vulnerability to garlic, leeks, and onions, and an inability to swim.
Her relationships feature a contentious history with Nagi Springfield, whom she pursued romantically before his curse. She harbors grudging respect for Negi, evolving from adversarial intent to dedicated guidance. Her sole close companion is the robot Chachamaru, though she tolerates associates like Jack Rakan and Albireo Imma. She participates in Mahora's Go and Tea Ceremony clubs, reflecting her preference for strategic and traditional pursuits.
In the *Negima!? Spring OVA*, adapting manga chapters about a class trip to a private island, Evangeline does not appear; the storyline centers on Negi and Asuna Kagurazaka reconciling after an argument.
Across all media, her character arc progresses from an isolated antagonist to a pivotal ally in Negi's quest, notably during conflicts like the Kyoto demon god incident and the Mundus Magicus journey. Her unresolved curse and connections to the Mage of the Beginning underscore her tragic immortality, positioning her as both a mentor and a perpetual prisoner of her circumstances.
