Description
Derflinger emerged as an ancient intelligent sword forged over 6,000 years ago by Sasha, the first Gandálfr, using elven magic. Designed explicitly to assassinate Brimir, the original Void Mage, it fulfilled its purpose by piercing Brimir’s heart. As a spirit sword, Derflinger’s consciousness survives physical destruction by transferring to another nearby blade over several weeks, preserving all memories and abilities intact.

Discovered in a Tristain sword shop and sold for 100 gold coins due to its shoddy appearance, Louise de La Vallière purchased it for Saito Hiraga. When Saito first wielded the blade, Derflinger awakened, revealing his sentience through speech and declaring himself Saito’s destined partner—a bond he reinforces by consistently calling Saito "partner." His combat capabilities include absorbing magical attacks, though powerful spells like those from Square-class mages require extended absorption time. If Saito is incapacitated, Derflinger can temporarily control his body to move him to safety, depleting stored magical energy.

Beyond a weapon, Derflinger provides tactical guidance and personal counsel. His vast knowledge spans Halkeginia’s lore, including void mages, elves, rhyme dragons, and ancient phenomena like Jormungandr’s Counter. He advises during battles, urging Saito to wield him against threats such as Fouquet’s earth golem or the Ancient Dragon, and offers romantic teasing to Saito and Louise about their relationship. His talkative, occasionally sarcastic personality leads him to comment on situations even when uninvolved.

Derflinger’s physical form shatters multiple times. He breaks while absorbing an Ancient Dragon’s attack, knocking Saito from the dragon mid-flight; his consciousness later resurfaces in a fighter jet’s control panel. When assassins destroy his blade, he transfers to one of Saito’s katanas. Each destruction underscores his nature as an indestructible spirit transcending any vessel.

He shares a profound bond with Saito, evolving from a weapon to a trusted confidant who expresses joy in Saito’s presence and distress during separations or perceived losses. As the original Gandálfr’s partner, he guards ancient secrets—including void magic’s true nature and Brimir’s familiars’ legacy—cementing his role as both a pivotal combat asset and a keeper of foundational magical history.
