Description
Born in Monaco, Check Mate is an Akugyo Chojin (Brutal Chojin) who transforms into a Seigi Chojin (Justice Chojin). A homeless orphan surviving on the streets, he was discovered by veteran Devil Chojin Sunshine, who unofficially adopted him. Sunshine subjected Check Mate to grueling training designed to erase his ability to feel pain, eliminate concepts of failure or defeat, and forge a perfect warrior. This upbringing left him emotionally stunted, unable to comprehend positive emotions or social gestures; he performed handshakes by breaking his opponent's arm.
Introduced as an antagonist in the d.M.p arc under Sunshine's orders to take revenge on the New Generation Chojin, Check Mate possesses pale skin and white eyes. His distinctive attire includes red armor with a black cross on the left breast, a check-pattern cape, knee-length black boots, chess-piece shoulder pads (a rook left, a knight right), and a crown. His primary ability involves transforming his body by pressing buttons beneath the shoulder pieces: Rook Form grants stone-like durability, Knight Form creates a centaur-like horse body, and a fused Grand Slam Form combines both, alongside his standard King Form. His inability to feel pain allows relentless combat but hides critical injuries.
During his debut match against Mantaro Kinniku, Check Mate relished his imperviousness to pain, dislocating his own joints to escape holds and dominating with sadistic glee. He mocked the old Devil Chojin honor code, attempted to murder Mantaro, and backhanded an intervening child. Sunshine intervened to protect the child, prompting Check Mate to attack his mentor. Unaware of accumulated damage to his knee due to his pain insensitivity, he was defeated by Mantaro's Kinniku Buster. Sunshine carried him away, vowing retraining.
Following defeat, Check Mate abandoned sadism to become a Justice Chojin. He reappeared in the Burning Inner Strength Challenge Arc, initially intimidating Mantaro but later defending him from illegal attacks and declaring a new desire for honorable combat over hatred. He accompanied Mantaro to subsequent matches, provided commentary, and joined team activities like karaoke. His heroism solidified in the Chojin Olympics: The Resurrection Arc, where he partnered with his fan Shinya. When attacked by Mr. Gacha, Check Mate prioritized Shinya's safety over victory, cutting their bindings to carry Shinya to safety and accepting disqualification.
In the Demon Seed Arc, he joined allies consoling Mantaro after a loss to Kevin Mask and later assisted Kevin's training. His role expanded in the Ultimate Chojin Tag Tournament Arc, training with Ilioukhine and volunteering for a time-travel mission to save Robin Mask. After Alisa Mackintosh's injury, he advocated for a tournament to resolve conflicts and pleaded with Seiuchin to be his tag partner. When Seiuchin refused and allied with Neptuneman, Check Mate eavesdropped on their "Perfect Chojin Revival" plans. He attacked Neptuneman but was overpowered and struck by the Optical Fiber Cross Bomber, resulting in the skin of his face being removed. Paramedics carried him away after he warned the New Generation of Seiuchin's beastly transformation. He was later sighted boarding a bus to the tournament.
Key techniques include the Stallion Style Honorable Driver and Black Neigh of Centaurus. His relationship with Sunshine evolved from surrogate father and mentor to estranged adversary during his villainous phase, then to mutual respect post-redemption. They reconciled civilly in the Demon Seed Arc despite divergent worldviews. As a Justice Chojin, Check Mate developed an appreciation for simple pleasures like Japanese cuisine and scenery. In non-canon spin-offs like the V-Jump manga and anime filler arcs, he participates in fights as a hero.
