Description
Marchosias is a Crimson Lord bound to the Flame Haze Margery Daw, bearing the true name "Claw and Fangs of Violation." His flame manifests in an ultramarine color. He typically expresses his will through a Divine Vessel called Grimoire, taking the form of a book. Marchosias possesses a true physical form: a gigantic, fiery ultramarine-colored werewolf with yellow eyes, capable of roaring loudly enough to pierce through Seals and reach humans outside. This form temporarily manifested when Margery lost control during battle, though such a manifestation normally destroys the contractor's body.
Personality-wise, Marchosias presents as frivolous and noisy, frequently speaking in a rough, vulgar manner. He often makes inappropriate or teasing comments directed at Margery, resulting in her physically striking the Grimoire and telling him to shut up. Despite this abrasive dynamic, he shares Margery's enjoyment of combat, laughing violently during fights. Beneath his wild exterior, he is a reliable comrade to Margery and occasionally serves as a perceptive, cunning mentor figure for her and her human associates. He can exhibit calmness and solemnity when necessary, acting as the cooler-headed counterpart to Margery's impulsiveness. Their partnership, marked by constant verbal conflict, stems from deep mutual trust and friendship.
Marchosias first encountered Margery in the Middle Ages when she was in a critical state after "the Silver" eliminated her targets for revenge. He compelled her to form a contract then. Throughout their long partnership, their relationship evolved from one driven solely by vengeance to one incorporating mutual reliance and unspoken loyalty. During Margery's emotional collapse triggered by revelations about the Silver, Marchosias displayed fierce protectiveness, threatening to fully manifest on Earth—an act defying his nature as a Crimson Lord—if Shana and her allies attempted to kill Margery.
His abilities are channeled primarily through the Grimoire. Margery utilizes bookmarks within it for communication with human allies and to store objects like the Treasure Tool Blutsauger; these bookmarks also detect Unrestricted Spells. She flies by standing atop the manifested Grimoire. During his temporary manifestation as the giant werewolf, Marchosias demonstrated offensive capabilities like shooting Endan (flame projectiles) from his mouth. His manifested form was feared for its potential to dissolve Seals and affect areas beyond them.
Marchosias's name references one of the 72 demons listed in the Ars Goetia, specifically a marquis manifesting as a wolf with griffin wings. His character arc emphasizes the complexity of his bond with Margery, transitioning from a tool for revenge to a genuine partnership where both rely on each other for emotional and tactical support, evident in later storylines involving conflicts with Bal Masqué and the creation of Xanadu.
