Description
Moomin, also known as Moomintroll, is the central protagonist of the anime film Tanoshii Moomin Ikka: Moomin Tani no Suisei, which adapts the story Comet in Moominland. He is the son of Moominpappa and Moominmamma, and the family has recently moved into the Moominhouse in Moominvalley. Moomin is a young, gentle, and endlessly curious troll with a round white body and a large snout. His background is that of a beloved only child in a warm and accepting family, but he is also eager to explore the world beyond his home.

In terms of personality, Moomin is characterized by his innate curiosity and enthusiasm for new experiences. He is naturally optimistic and always tries to see the bright side of any situation, even when faced with danger or uncertainty. He possesses a kind and compassionate heart, which makes him a loyal friend and a dependable companion. At the same time, he is a sensitive soul who can become anxious about upsetting others, yet he consistently finds the courage to act when it matters most. His motivations are driven by a desire to understand the unknown, to protect his family and friends, and to preserve the peace of Moominvalley. When a comet threatens to destroy the valley, Moomin’s primary motivation becomes discovering the truth about the impending disaster and finding a way to keep everyone safe.

In the story, Moomin serves as the leader of the journey to the observatory in the Lonely Mountains, accompanied by Sniff and later joined by Snufkin and the Snorks. His role is to bring together a diverse group of characters and to inspire them with his bravery and determination. He is the emotional anchor of the group, often uplifting spirits when fear or doubt sets in. Moomin’s key relationships include his loving parents, who encourage his adventurous spirit while providing a stable home base; his best friend Snufkin, a philosophical wanderer whose freedom and wisdom deeply influence him; Snorkmaiden, a snork who becomes his romantic interest and whom he first rescues from a poisonous bush; and Sniff, a timid but loyal companion who often looks up to him. These relationships deepen as the adventure unfolds, with Moomin learning to trust others and rely on their strengths.

Throughout the film, Moomin undergoes subtle development. Initially portrayed as a child who is excited but somewhat naive about the world, he grows more mature as he faces real threats, such as a giant octopus and the terrible heat caused by the approaching comet. He learns that courage is not about the absence of fear but about acting despite it, and he gains a deeper appreciation for home and family. By the end, when the comet passes and the valley is spared, Moomin emerges with a stronger sense of responsibility and a renewed love for his home.

Moomin does not possess any magical or supernatural abilities. His notable qualities are his resilience, his optimistic outlook, and his ability to bring out the best in others. He can think creatively in dangerous situations, such as using a mirror to reflect light and save Snorkmaiden, and he has a natural talent for making friends. His most distinctive ability is perhaps his unwavering hope, which helps the entire group endure the crisis and find joy even in the darkest moments.
