Description
Aqune hails from Nuuma, where she served with her sister Corona as Oracle's Handmaidens until a Buzzray attack on their blimp caused her amnesia and separation. Found alone in the Forest of Bewilderment by Buguese, her discovered Manacle led him to bring her to the Invectid Nation, who valued her Handmaiden status for accessing Oracle Keys.
For much of her life, Mantid controlled Aqune using a mask enforcing loyalty to the Invectids. Free of its influence, she sided with the Spider Riders, creating deep internal conflict. Personally averse to battle, she nevertheless fought skillfully when compelled. Despite the mind control, she perceived the Invectids as a suffering family she felt morally obligated not to abandon, refusing Hunter's offers of freedom. Masked, she repeatedly fought the Spider Riders, though she occasionally intervened against dishonorable acts, like stopping Buguese from killing a vulnerable Hunter.
Aqune exhibits calmness and profound compassion. She frequently prays to the Spirit Oracle and centers herself with chants such as "Light brings knowledge, knowledge brings compassion." Reserved yet fiercely loyal, her care extended to the Invectids who raised her. She demonstrated compassion through cooking, nursing injured allies like Hunter after a fall, and acting on strong moral convictions, such as shielding Hunter or insisting on aiding the Invectids' survival.
Her relationships reflect divided loyalties. She shares a bond with her battle spider, Portia, sister to Magma's Brutus. Her dynamic with Hunter involves mutual protection: he attempts to free her, while she safeguards him in vulnerable moments. Her relationship with Buguese evolved from absolute obedience to liberation when he destroyed her mask after Mantid betrayed the Invectid cause. Reuniting with Corona was strained by memory loss and conflicting allegiances, but they ultimately worked together as Handmaidens.
As a Handmaiden, Aqune uniquely channels the Oracle's power directly to aid other Spider Riders. She wields a glaive in civilian attire and a rapier when armored. Her transformation call is "Oracle's Light," distinct from other Riders' "Arachna Power." Her combat skills are exceptional, and she becomes one of only two Riders (alongside Hunter) capable of merging with Oracle Keys for enhanced transformations and weapons.
Her arc culminated when Buguese removed her mask during Mantid's attempt to seize the Oracle's power, granting her permanent freedom. Joining the Spider Riders to stop Mantid, she and Corona used their Handmaiden abilities to help Hunter regain control over the Oracle's power, expressing concern when hatred influenced him. After Mantid's defeat, she rode alongside Corona and the other Riders to protect the Inner World. In the novels, her role is reduced to a minor villain appearing briefly in "Quest of the Earthen," with no mention of her Handmaiden status or connection to Corona.
