Description
Koyu Ri, also called Li Kouyuu, is the adopted son of Kou Reishin, a high-ranking official in the Department of Civil Administration. Abandoned as an infant, he was first taken in by an elderly couple who named him "Kou." After their murder, he was orphaned again and sold into child slavery, eventually bound to a sacred tree as a sacrificial offering. Rescued by Kou Reishin, he was brought to the capital, Kiyou, where Reishin’s future wife, Yuri, served as his personal attendant. Following their marriage, Koyu was formally adopted, and his name changed to Li Kouyuu to preserve his original "Kou" name.

Renowned for his intelligence and scholarly prowess, Koyu became the youngest person to pass the imperial examinations at age 16, achieving the top "Jougen" rank. He entered government service motivated by loyalty to his adoptive father, aiming to repay his kindness despite initial frustration with Reishin’s aloof demeanor, later recognizing Reishin’s genuine care.

Despite his brilliance, Koyu possesses a remarkably poor sense of direction, frequently becoming lost even within the palace unless guided, though this issue vanishes when he is drunk. He is easily irritated and grows nervous during public speeches. He often declares that women are nothing but trouble and has rejected all politically motivated marriage proposals. Though short-tempered, he is considered a fine young man, greatly influenced by his adoptive mother, Yuri.

As an official, Koyu first served as Vice Minister of the Ministry of Civil Administration under Reishin. Hardworking and loyal, he acknowledges others' efforts and proves a highly capable bureaucrat. However, his dedication led him to cover Reishin’s neglect of duties rather than report it, resulting in Koyu’s imprisonment under accusations of power abuse. Though removed as Vice Minister, he retained official status thanks to Kou Shuurei’s intervention.

Koyu shares a close bond with Ran Shuuei, though he vocally denies their friendship. Since childhood, Shuuei has helped him navigate due to his poor direction sense, a practice continuing into adulthood. He also tutors Kou Shuurei, considering her a friend while unaware they are cousins. The Kou family once intended to marry him to Shuurei to ensure future clan leadership.

Initially assigned directly to Emperor Ryuuki, Koyu was infuriated by the emperor’s neglect and frequent absences. After Ryuuki agreed to tutoring and grew more engaged in governance, he offered Koyu an iris flower as a token of trust. Koyu accepted it as a symbol of loyalty and belief in Ryuuki as a worthy emperor.
