Description
Sougo Okita is a young officer of the Shinsengumi, the special police force of Edo, where he serves as captain of the First Division. At eighteen years old, he is one of the youngest members of the force yet is widely regarded as its most talented swordsman. He has short, light chestnut hair, sharp eyes, and typically wears the Shinsengumi uniform, often appearing with a blank, deadpan expression. He is also frequently seen wearing an eye mask while napping during duty, a habit that reflects his laid-back attitude toward his responsibilities.

Sougo's parents died when he was young, leaving his older sister, Mitsuba, to raise him by herself in their home village. Mitsuba later acknowledged that she spoiled him because of their parents' death, which contributed to his aloof and distant personality. During his childhood, he trained at Isao Kondo's dojo, where Kondo took him under his wing, and this connection eventually led Sougo to join the Shinsengumi.

In general, Sougo acts aloof, lazy, and disinterested, and he often slack off on his duties. Despite this, he becomes attentive and ruthless when the situation demands it, and he does not hesitate to cut down enemies. He is quick-witted, light-hearted, and somewhat childish, yet his speech is heavily deadpan, and his words can be sharp and biting. He is extremely sadistic, finding amusement in cruelty, and he enjoys watching women fight because he finds the expressions on their faces hilarious. Beneath his flippant exterior lies a passionate heart, and his desire for peace is stronger than that of most other characters. He silently holds to a partnership principle involving Kondo, Hijikata, and himself, believing that if one of them strays from the right path, he must draw his sword against them to bring them back.

Sougo's motivations are shaped by loyalty to those he cares about. He deeply adores his sister Mitsuba and speaks politely around her, in contrast to his usual crude and sarcastic tone. He has great affection for Kondo, who acts as a mentor and father figure to him. At the same time, he constantly antagonizes Vice-Commander Toushirou Hijikata, frequently attempting to harm and humiliate him, partly out of a stated desire to take Hijikata's place as vice-chief and partly because he resents how Hijikata treated Mitsuba coldly despite her evident feelings for him. Despite this rivalry, Sougo regards Hijikata as one of his three close friends, the other two being Kondo and Gintoki, and his clashes with Hijikata often reveal a grudging mutual respect.

Within the story, Sougo plays a recurring supporting role as a key member of the Shinsengumi, often appearing in both comedic and serious arcs. He frequently interacts with the main characters of the Yorozuya, particularly Kagura, whom he regards as a rival after an unfinished rock-paper-scissors duel during a cherry blossom party; he calls her China and insists that he will be the only one to defeat her. During the Mitsuba storyline, his sister's grave illness exposes a more vulnerable side of him, forcing him to confront his emotional turmoil and prioritize his relationships over his usual sadistic tendencies. In major conflicts such as the Shinsengumi Crisis, Demon Sword, Shogun Assassination, and Farewell Shinsengumi arcs, he proves himself to be a dependable and formidable fighter, even gaining an advantage against the powerful Yato warrior Kamui through flexible thinking in combat.

In terms of abilities, Sougo is a master of kenjutsu, with swordsmanship said to be on par with that of Kamui. He is agile and highly skilled in close combat, capable of taking on an entire squad by himself, and he is trusted completely by Kondo and the others who watched him grow up. He also claims to be the best sniper in the Shinsengumi, though in practice he often favors a bazooka over his sword. His primary weakness is his relatively low durability; he jokes that because he is an S, he cannot withstand being hit, describing his body as a glass sword. His combination of extraordinary sword skill, clever strategy, and chaotic fighting style makes him one of the most capable and unpredictable members of the Shinsengumi.
