Phoenix Ikki, one of the orphans Mitsumasa Kido dispatched for training as a Saint, endured exceptionally brutal conditioning on Death Queen Island under his master Guilty. This ordeal forged his signature lone-wolf mentality and immense combat capabilities, setting him apart from his peers. His early actions positioned him as an antagonist when he stole fragments of the Sagittarius Gold Cloth during the Galaxian Wars tournament, seeking vengeance against those responsible for his suffering. Though classified as a Bronze Saint, his power consistently exceeded that of most Silver Saints, an established fact among fellow Saints.
Ikki's personality contrasts sharply with his younger brother, Andromeda Shun. Where Shun embodies calmness and empathy, Ikki projects aggression, coldness, and emotional detachment, though his actions remain deeply rooted in loyalty to Shun, his friends, and Athena. His Cosmo burns with hatred and anger yet is uniquely guided by protective instincts. This duality enables him to operate independently, often arriving unexpectedly to aid allies during critical battles.
His combat prowess centers on two primary techniques: the Phoenix Wings Rise (鳳翼天翔, Hōyoku Tenshō), a physical attack channeling wind and heat into a devastating concussive force, and the Phoenix Illusion Demon Fist (鳳凰幻魔拳, Hōō Genmaken), which targets an opponent's psyche to induce mental trauma or extract information. Like his mythical namesake, Ikki resurrects stronger after each death, a trait pivotal to his endurance. During the Sanctuary arc, he awakened his Seventh Sense in a near-fatal confrontation with Virgo Shaka, elevating his power to rival Gold Saints. His resilience was further tested against Gemini Saga, who defeated him using the Galaxian Explosion technique.
In the Poseidon arc, Ikki reemerged to defeat the Marine General Lyumnades Kayza, who had tortured his comrades. He later confronted Sea Dragon Kanon, Poseidon's manipulator, leveraging his Demon Fist to uncover Kanon's treachery, though their battle ended inconclusively when Ikki withdrew in disdain.
The Hades Chapter marks a significant evolution in his role. Ikki entered the conflict later than the other Bronze Saints, appearing in the Underworld after they had progressed beyond the initial challenges. There, he swiftly defeated Garuda Aiacos, one of Hades' top Specters and a judge of the Underworld. His most critical confrontation occurred when Hades possessed Shun's body. In a desperate attempt to free his brother, Ikki physically assaulted the deity, only to be effortlessly repelled. As punishment, Hades executed him and condemned his soul to Cocytus, the frozen hell reserved for those who defy the gods.
Ikki's escape from Cocytus differs between adaptations: the manga depicts Pandora facilitating his release, while the anime shows him breaking free unaided. After resurrection, he rejoined the battle in Elysium, where his Cloth transformed into a God Cloth alongside the other Bronze Saints. Empowered by this divine armor, he participated in the collective assault against Hades' true form.
Beyond the original saga, Ikki appears in the canonical sequel *Saint Seiya: Next Dimension*. He travels 243 years into the past, intervening in a conflict between Aries Shion and the Specter Suikyou. His journey through past Zodiac Temples includes a battle with Gemini Cain, who recognized his valor and healed him after an exchange of Galaxian Explosions. The past Leo Gold Saint, Kaiser, later proclaimed Ikki the future successor to the Leo Gold Cloth.
