Pegasus Seiya is an orphan trained in Greece to obtain the Pegasus Bronze Cloth, one of the armors worn by the warriors of the Greek goddess Athena. Driven by the desire to reunite with his older sister, Seika, who disappeared after he was sent away, he returns to Japan and enters the Galaxian Wars tournament.
He possesses an unwavering determination and refuses to surrender, no matter how hopeless the battle. This persistence often leads to against-all-odds victories. Though impulsive, he is guided by a powerful sense of justice, fairness, and deep loyalty to his friends and Athena. He is generally reluctant to fight female opponents.
His journey transforms him from a youth focused on a personal goal into a selfless protector of Earth and Athena. Through numerous battles, his motivations broaden from finding his sister to defending peace and justice alongside his fellow warriors.
His power comes from Cosmos, the fundamental energy of the universe. By burning his Cosmo, he achieves superhuman abilities. His signature techniques are the Pegasus Meteor Fist and Pegasus Comet Fist. He awakens the Seventh Sense, accessing his Cosmo's true potential to perform feats like moving at light speed. Later, he awakens the Eighth Sense, allowing him to retain consciousness and travel freely in the realm of the dead.
In a major conflict with Hades, Athena sacrifices herself. Seiya and his companions follow her into the Underworld. There, his Pegasus Cloth evolves into a God Cloth, a divine armor essential for battling gods. In the final battle in Elysium, he fights Hades and his subordinates, Thanatos and Hypnos. He intercepts a sword strike meant for Athena, resulting in a mortal wound and a heroic sacrifice.
Years later, as an adult in *Saint Seiya Omega*, he has achieved the rank of Gold Saint and wears the Sagittarius Gold Cloth. He acts as a mentor to a new generation of Saints, including the new Pegasus Bronze Saint, Kōga, and is regarded as a legendary hero who continues to guide and protect Athena.
He is one of the many unrecognized children of Mitsumasa Kido, founder of the Graad Foundation orphanage, making the other Bronze Saints his half-brothers. He was trained for six years by the Silver Saint Eagle Marin at the Sanctuary in Greece. He fulfills the conceptual role of the "Pegasus Saint," a fated hero whose presence guarantees hope and the possibility of miracles for humanity in its struggles against the gods.
He is a reincarnation of previous Pegasus Saints, including Pegasus Tenma from the 18th century and the very first from mythological times, who was the first human to wound the god Hades. This establishes a destined cycle of conflict between the Pegasus Saint and Hades throughout history.
