Description
Kumiko Honma, daughter of Dr. Jotaro Honma who once saved Black Jack's life, moved from China to Japan after her father's death. Under the care of Tetsu, a former patient of her father who treats her as his own daughter, she works part-time as a waitress at his coffee shop – a place Black Jack frequents. She balances this job with her studies at Oana Senior High School.
Visually, Kumiko is a teenage girl with shoulder-length brown hair and brown eyes. She typically wears her school uniform: a blue jacket over a white collared shirt with a red ribbon, paired with a red skirt. Her waitress outfit consists of a white shirt with a red ribbon, a black skirt, and a blue apron. Her personality is kind, mature, shy, caring, introverted, and attentive.
She forms an intergenerational friendship with Black Jack, who views her as a younger sister due to his debt to her father. Kumiko remains unaware that Black Jack was her first love, as she cannot recall his face from their earlier meetings. Her friendships include Chiyoko Wato, Sharaku, and Pinoko.
Her story diverges between adaptations. In the anime, Kumiko suffers from glaucoma. Black Jack performs her eye surgery. Post-surgery, she experiences visions of the deceased cornea donor's fiancé, leading to emotional turmoil that Black Jack helps her resolve. In the manga, named Kumi Yamashita, she faces a different challenge: at 18, her fiancé Shoichi Maruguri abandons her after she develops Cushing's syndrome. Black Jack cures her condition and later intervenes when Shoichi attempts to reconcile after her recovery, shielding her.
Across narratives, Kumiko embodies resilience through personal loss and illness. Her supportive environment at the coffee shop and her symbolic significance to Black Jack as a connection to his past and a reminder of Dr. Honma's legacy remain central.
