TV-Series
Description
Jerome is a major supporting character from Ginga Densetsu Weed, introduced as a German Shepherd with a black and light cream coat and a distinctive torn right ear, a battle wound inflicted during a fight with a dog named Ron. His past is rooted in human servitude, as he was trained to be a professional contract killer and guard dog, a background that left deep psychological scars. Prior to meeting the protagonist Weed, Jerome was the leader of a squad tasked with hunting down and destroying a genetically altered, escaped experimental dog known as P4, or Kaibutsu.
His personality is defined by a serious, brave, and determined demeanor, often facing hardships with a calm and analytical attitude. Jerome is highly attentive, frequently noticing details that others overlook, a trait that makes him a skilled strategist. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a profound inner turmoil. His past as an assassin haunts him, leading him to believe that some evil resides within his own heart. He carries an immense burden of shame, specifically for having ordered his subordinates to their deaths during the mission against P4 while he survived. This guilt makes him unafraid of death but terrified of humiliation, and he constantly seeks a place to die an honorable death in order to atone for his perceived failures. Initially, his harsh training also instilled in him a belief that dogs must endure any treatment from humans without fighting back.
Jerome's primary role in the story evolves from a mission-focused killer to the strategist and a very close friend of Weed, the son of the legendary leader Gin. After succeeding in destroying P4, he joins the Ou army and becomes one of Weed's most trusted and capable allies, often acting as his adviser and teaching him fighting techniques. He holds deep respect for Weed, Gin, and the elder dog Smith, admiring their willingness to sacrifice themselves for others. Weed’s strong sense of justice profoundly impacts Jerome, making him view his own pragmatic morals as ugly and driving him to seek self-improvement by emulating Weed’s example. This devotion leads to a key conflict when Jerome disobeys Weed's direct order not to kill, instead eliminating two of Hogen's spies to protect the pack from what he views as a necessary evil. As punishment, Weed banishes him from the pack, though Jerome continues to work independently to support his friends from the shadows.
Throughout his journey, Jerome forges several key relationships. His bond with Weed is central, built on mutual respect and a desire to protect the young leader's idealistic vision of the world. He later forms a significant relationship with a female German Shepherd named Lydia, who originally served as an enemy lieutenant in a Russian war dog pack. Despite beginning as adversaries, they fall in love, and after the conflict against the hybrid bears, Lydia becomes his mate, and together they have six pups.
Jerome's character shows notable development from a grim, guilt-ridden assassin into a more settled, though still serious, ally. His self-destructive quest for an honorable death is a recurring theme, but over time, he learns the value of sacrificing himself for friends rather than merely seeking death as an escape from shame. His abilities are substantial; beyond his combat prowess as a former guard dog and killer, his greatest asset is his keen intellect. He serves as a master strategist for the Ou army, capable of assessing enemy weaknesses and devising effective plans, such as using P4's berserk button to his advantage. His physical capabilities include being a formidable fighter, enduring severe injuries like a bullet lodged in his leg which he kept as self-imposed punishment, and surviving brutal battles against powerful enemies such as the monster P4 and the Russian dogs.
