Description
Hone Onna began life as Tsuyu, a geisha skilled in crafting paper balloons. She fell deeply in love with Shinsaburo, who betrayed her by selling her to a brothel to settle his debts. Within the brothel, she formed a close bond with the prostitute Kiyo and encountered Tetsuya, a man who genuinely loved her. Prioritizing Kiyo's freedom, Tsuyu arranged an escape for her and Tetsuya. Consumed by jealousy, Kiyo betrayed them to the brothel owner, leading to their murder. Tsuyu's body was discarded in a river, merging with the spirits of other wronged women and transforming her into the yokai Hone Onna ("Bone Woman").
Wandering villages seeking companionship, her inability to fully conceal her skeletal form terrified humans. Ai Enma found her during such an encounter and offered her a place as a companion. Hesitant at first, Hone Onna accepted after sensing something in Ai, becoming the third and only human-originated member of the team. Her duties involve investigating clients and targets, often using the alias "Sone Anna" while undercover. She adopts various disguises, such as casual modern clothing or professional attire like a bartender or school gym teacher, to gather information.
Her abilities include traveling between the human world and the Realm of Eternal Twilight, magically altering her attire, manipulating memories to create illusions of familiarity, and transforming into a dark red straw doll with a red string around its neck. She can selectively expose her skeletal form to intimidate targets. She wields knife-like weapons imbued with blue spiritual fire and demonstrates contortionist skills, though she struggles to extricate herself from tight spaces afterward.
Personality-wise, she maintains a mild and composed demeanor but exhibits occasional flashes of temper, especially when called "old lady." She expresses sympathy for human suffering more frequently than Ai's other companions, exemplified by rescuing a pregnant woman from suicide and later requesting Ai to eventually save Kiyo's vengeful spirit, acknowledging their shared pain. She shows loyalty to Ai and her companions, though harbors consistent annoyance toward Kikuri.
During the events of "Three Vessels," following Ai's temporary death, Hone Onna lived as a bartender until Ai's spirit returned and recruited her again. She then posed as a gym teacher at Yuzuki Mikage's school. Later, she and Ichimokuren refused to assist Yuzuki as the interim Hell Girl, instead seeking out Tsugumi Shibata to uncover her motives for leaving Saigawara City. They correctly deduced Tsugumi's intent to alter Yuzuki's fate and her subsequent departure after failing. Hone Onna resumed her role as Ai's companion upon Ai's return as the permanent Hell Girl.
