Wanyudo serves as Ai Enma's primary companion throughout the series, typically appearing as a mild-mannered elderly man clad in traditional Japanese attire: a haori, yukata, fedora hat, and often a red scarf. Despite this aged human guise, he possesses formidable supernatural strength and martial prowess.
His origin traces back over 400 years. Wanyudo began existence as the left wheel of a royal ox-drawn carriage. During a wartime escape attempt, fire arrows struck the carriage carrying a princess and her attendants, causing it to plunge off a cliff. The impact killed all occupants. The left wheel, separated from the wreckage and still burning, underwent a transformation into a youkai – a flaming wooden entity featuring a human face as its hubcap, eternally ablaze. In this fearsome form, he terrorized humans near the fatal cliff, gaining notoriety as a vengeful spirit. Ai Enma encountered him during her travels and offered him service. Accepting her invitation, he gained his human form and became her first companion, preceding her official role as "Hell Girl," marking the start of his centuries-long allegiance.
