Description
Kureno Sohma, a member of the Sohma family, initially bears the Rooster curse of the Chinese Zodiac until it shatters unexpectedly at age sixteen, a decade prior to the story’s primary timeline. Freed from the Zodiac bond, he remains with Akito Sohma, the family’s head, after witnessing her anguished collapse upon losing their mystical connection. Vowing to stay indefinitely, he conceals his liberation, feigning continued curse-bound isolation within the estate.

Renowned for selflessness and kindness akin to Tohru Honda, Kureno’s loyalty to Akito arises from a wish to ease her solitude, unintentionally perpetuating her harmful conduct. He habitually subordinates his own needs, stifling personal yearnings like his budding affection for Arisa Uotani, a convenience store clerk encountered during infrequent excursions. Their early exchanges reveal his worldly inexperience—such as bafflement over shopping baskets—which captivates Arisa.

His bond with Akito deepens into codependency, marked by a clandestine sexual relationship that fractures his friendship with Shigure Sohma and alienates him from relatives. Acting as Akito’s aide and confidant, he oversees her affairs while masking his curse-free state. Though he occasionally intervenes on others’ behalf—freeing Rin Sohma from confinement or urging Haru Sohma to depart the estate—he refrains from confronting Akito’s authority for his own preservation.

A violent turning point occurs when Akito stabs him in a rage, repudiating his unwavering devotion. This act, paired with introspection on his role in enabling her destructiveness, spurs his decision to abandon the Sohma compound. Arisa aids his relocation, and the pair resolve to cohabitate, initiating his pursuit of independence. His exit also sparks Akito’s eventual reckoning with the Zodiac members.

Kureno’s childhood, shaped by the Sohma curse, includes an early connection to Akito predating her birth. His name, drawn from the traditional Japanese month “Kurenoharu,” resulted from a mix-up with Momiji Sohma’s zodiac designation. His pre-curse-break animal form, a sparrow instead of a rooster, mirrors his gentle demeanor.

In later years, Kureno tentatively cultivates life beyond familial constraints, forging a committed relationship with Arisa. His journey remains shadowed by decades of emotional repression and codependency, yet concludes with cautious optimism as he steps toward self-determination, distancing himself from the Sohma legacy.
