TV Special
Description
Ryou Masaoka was a student on Tatsumiya Island and predecessor to Kenji Kondou as school council president. He suffered from a serious chronic illness causing frequent chest pain and breathing difficulties, leaving him often sick with a potentially shortened lifespan. Despite this, he maintained an amiable and caring personality. He offered advice and comfort to friends like Kazuki Makabe and Shouko Hazama, encouraging Kazuki to open up and reassuring Shouko about her family.
Grateful to the island community for their kindness during his illness, Ryou volunteered to pilot the high-risk Titan-model Fafner (TSX) for the critical Plan-L mission, wanting to contribute meaningfully before his potential death. The Titan-model endangered the pilot's life even during its brief operational periods of around fifteen minutes. Before departure, he arranged for his friend Karin Kuramae to care for his dog, Puku.
During Plan-L aboard the *L-Plan*, Ryou piloted alongside Yumi Ikoma to lure Festum away from Tatsumiya Island. Yumi initially distanced herself due to disagreements over the mission's risks. Later, Ryou supported her proposal to reduce scheduled piloting times, advocating to the commander by stating her father, the plan's co-developer, valued the crew's survival. This intervention reconciled their friendship. Although the discovery of a potential escape procedure offered brief hope, the mission required their full commitment to prevent Festum from reaching the island. While piloting the Fafner, Ryou experienced unprecedented physical freedom, noting the absence of his usual chest pain and breathing difficulties.
Ryou did not survive the mission. Later, a photograph of him with his family appears during a conversation involving Saki Nishio. He is also seen among deceased individuals during spiritual encounters with Kenji Kondou and Sui Kaburagi. He appears briefly alongside other deceased island residents in the Keel Block area and later with Canon Memphis-Hazama at Kazuki's restaurant, manifestations tied to Gordius Crystal phenomena.
